Welcome, and thank you for being here to learn more about me to see if we could be a good fit to work together! My name is Stefanie and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of Wisconsin. I have over 10 years of experience working in the mental health field and have worked in a variety of settings, including inpatient hospital, Intensive Outpatient programs, in-home therapy, case management programs and outpatient therapy. All that means is that I have a wide variety of experience that has allowed me to see and work with a wide range and severity of clinical issues. Much of my experience is working with depression, anxiety, complex trauma, PTSD and severe and persistent mental illness, like schizophrenia. Throughout the course of working with those particular mental health issues, I also have worked with family and relationship conflicts and anger issues.
My desire to pursue a career in the mental health field began in my senior year of high school and I stayed with that path all throughout my undergraduate and graduate education. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire (go Blugolds!) and my Master's degree in Educational Psychology - Community Counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. After I completed my undergraduate degree, I worked for about one year for the Bureau of Milwaukee Child Welfare as a case manager for families involved in the foster care system. I learned quickly in that job while making referrals for the families on my caseload for mental health services that I wanted to be the person receiving those referrals. I have experienced first-hand mental health issues in my own family and understand how challenging it can be coping with these issues for the person struggling and their loved ones. I also have seen how much life can improve for people when they find the support they need and can begin to take better care of themselves. Despite so much effort to eliminate it, the stigma around mental health remains and I believe that being able to access support online can reach so many more people who want to take steps toward taking better care of themselves. I recently took a few years away from outpatient therapy to be at home with my young, growing family and I think that utilizing online counseling is the perfect fit right now for me and my family.
I use a holistic, person-centered, eclectic approach to my work, meaning I will meet you where you are at and tailor my approach to your needs. My treatment approach is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and has been strongly influenced by Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). I also utilize mindfulness techniques, values based therapy and solution focused therapy. I am also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming) for working with people who have experienced trauma. If you are looking for someone to give advice or tell you what to do, I am not your person. I believe in facilitating a conversation that leads you to discovering how you can best cope with, manage and overcome the struggles you have. That sounds like a little “tough love” and I do have that side of me, but I also come from a place of empathy and warmth that helps to foster that conversation to be supportive and effective. I believe that mental health is as important as physical health, and just like it can take time to see positive changes in our physical health and wellness, I believe that mental health requires the same consistency and patience to see positive changes.
I look forward to working with you and thank you again for taking the time to get to know me a little better.

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Stefanie Johnson. We don’t pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.
I have tried to connect with several therapists over the years. No one has met my needs or been as helpful as Stefanie. With her guidance and support, I have grown so much as a person and am continuing. I am incredibly thankful for her and am so grateful for everything we have been able to work on together.
Matching with Stefanie was something I never could have imagined helping in the capacity that it did. I am so incredibly thankful for her and the work she helped me achieve! She is kind and respectful and an amazing listener however, she knows how to challenge you and encourage you at the same time! Would highly highly recommend Stefanie.
Stefanie continues to be one of the best people in my corner I could ever ask for. She is incredibly insightful, encourages self improvement and exploration, and provides the perfect tools and resources to help me better understand myself and those around me. She has been a key factor in improving the quality of my life, my relationships, and my general happiness and well-being—and I'm eternally grateful I got matched up with her as a therapist. Thank you Stefanie!
Stephanie has been amazing and has helped me with some major break through. I'm so thankful to have her help during my healing journey
Stefanie has quickly become a dear friend. I feel as though we have known each other for much longer than the year I have been participating in therapy. She is so warm and welcoming and very easy to talk to. She never makes me feel judged and is always validating my feelings. She has such an honest, genuine way of caring for people and helping them discover ways to work through whatever they are going through. I am so appreciative of her suppprt and would highly recommend her to anyone in need.
She always is so helpful and friendly. I can't imagine finding another consular especially since I've grown so comfortable with her
I appreciate Stefanie’s support and how she helps me work through my most difficult feelings.
I love the way Stefanie presents herself and the way she writes in the messages and she really puts her time into helping :)
Stefanie really helped me understand my mother's eating disorder and helped me create/plan an intervention for her. Although I'm still trying to get something started, she has really helped me come up with solutions to bring up my concerns to my family. She is also a great listener and very easy to talk to! I would recommend Stefanie to anybody, she is very professional!
I came back to Stefanie this Fall after working with her earlier in the year. She's sincere, knowledgeable and solutions-driven. This was/is very important for me after working with other therapists in the past that only listen and don't offer any solutions. I would highly recommend her!
Stefanie helps so much to view problems in a different light and it helps me view them that way when I am going through day to day life. It has been such a great investment in myself to be able to work with Stefanie!
Since working with Stephanie I have seen my mental health improve astronomically. She is very knowledgeable and patient and I really feel like she does everything she can for her clients
Stefanie is fantastic at what she does. She offers a space to talk and be heard. She gives great insight and tools to help work through feelings, issues, road blocks, etc. Stefanie is compassionate and is very knowledgeable in her practice. I would highly recommend her!
So far I'm really glad that I gave this service a chance and got matched up with Stefanie. She's given me a lot of meaningful homework to work on and she's proven that she does her homework too: I sent her some blog articles that I've written to explore my grief and I was pleasantly shocked when she came back with meaningful comments after reading. The video calls seem just as good as an office visit for me, I should have done this long before now.
So far; she’s been a very big help for me. Even with all my surrounding issues, she helps find a way for me to get through it
Stephanie is accessible to me on my schedule and provides a non-judgmental place to work through issues I’m struggling with.
Stefanie is absolutely amazing. I had really bad anxiety and was anxious to even attend therapy so when I found better help and saw that you could just message, I was very excited but also skeptical that it wouldn't work. Stefanie gave me worksheets and goals to do or accomplish and they honestly really helped me and gave me good coping techniques. I joined around the start of this month and I already feel 80% better thanks to Stefanie and better help! I couldn't have done it without her and her understanding.
I think Stefanie is a great counselor, she's very kind and gives me feelings of being comfortable and reassurance. She has helpped a ton already and it's been 2 weeks only. I enjoy our phone sessions too, we get a lot done together and she's pleasent to speak with, I really like her!
Stefanie has been instrumental in keeping my sanity day to day. She makes me feel heard and gives me tools and solutions to problems without dismissing my feelings. Highly recommend her!
She focuses on exactly what I need. I've been having great results. I love her so much!
