About Me

Hello, my name is Stephan Idris Mambazo. I am comfortable being called Stephan or Idris. I am a clinical social worker, licensed in the states of Alabama and Pennsylvania. I am a professionally certified specialist in The Grief Recovery Method®. I have been in the helping profession for over thirty years, with more than twenty years as a licensed clinician. I am a twice-graduate of Temple University School of Social Work in Philadelphia, earning bachelor and master degrees in social work. Additionally, I have successfully completed the required coursework and comprehensive examinations for the Ph.D. in Counseling Studies (all but dissertation) at Capella University. My primary focus of practice is helping those with challenges through various grief and loss issues, particularly after a traumatic loss(es), e.g., homicide, suicide, disaster/public emergency, domestic violence, and racial/gender hate. I am a subject matter expert in the areas of grief and trauma-informed care. I also have significant experience with relationship issues, couples counseling, and domestic/intimate partner violence/abuse in its various forms. I have more than 10 years of disaster mental health experience, and I am an effective sexual health interventionist with couples and individuals.

I am LGBTQ+ affirming and safe!!! I do not judge or moralize in my practice, or my personal life. I strive to apply the same authenticity professionally, I strive to live personally. I am here to help you navigate your experience journey. I cannot do it for you. That said, I believe that together we will unleash the power and insight already within you for your best-desired outcome from our therapeutic interactions together.

My counseling style is warm, interactive, and person-centered. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. I don't believe in stigmatizing labels. My approach combines empathic cognitive-behavioral, narrative, dialectical, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused brief therapies. Together, we will develop a treatment/service plan to meet your unique and specific needs. I applaud your courage to travel beyond the familiar to enter this journey with me into the unknown/unfamiliar. I believe you will not regret the choice you have now made.

I am looking forward to our journey toward greater emotional health!

Stepha Idris Mambazo

The bomb.com! I’ve had other therapists but none as wonderful as Stephan.

Dr. Mambazo is very easy to talk to and understanding! He responds promptly but doesn't pressure you to message him every day if you don't want/need to. He uses worksheets to help you understand the different material, but I like completing assignments - it makes me feel like I'm accomplishing something. He focuses on the patient's behavior and how you can change it to help you deal with/work through mood disorders.

Stephan was very quick to learn the degree of complexity of my situation and managed to work around my needs. I hope when I get back to this site that I can find him again.

Stephan is an amazing therapist. He’s compassionate and helpful, and he really puts himself in my shoes. I finally found a therapist that I feel really “gets me”.

Stephan has been a great counselor. I have struggled with my owner anger and anxiety. He was quick to teach me usable skills in a few sessions. To discuss and assign work that lead me to realizing where I struggle and to lead me in a direction that will assist with my self change and improvement.

I had gone through several therapists before being able to find Stephan. He has truly been an angel to me. He knew exactly what i needed to hear not what I expected to hear. He took the fear away from “mental” illness , which unlocked my ability to start to heal. I can not describe how thankful I am to have found him. I would recommend him over and over again. He changed my life.

I completely feel at ease talking with Stephan. He is very personable and responsive. We have only had one session and a few messages but I have high hopes already that he can help me.

Stephan's resume is ridiculously fantastic! However I am more interested in his relationship with me and how he can help me. So far he's been fantastic even though I have been quite evasive because I'm just fearful or guarded, online cousenling is new to me. Not once thus far has he given up on me! He is polite, respectful and smart. He is street smart and elegant. In this very short amount of time, he gets me, and by the grace of God I am so thankful for that. He partnered us together from the get-go!

Stephan has helped me to begin recovery from my grief after the sudden death of my husband. I now know it is normal to experience what I have felt and that it is possible to live through a catastrophic loss. And not just survive, but really live. Stephan is very empathetic and his own loss experiences make him very compassionate. Being able to contact him whenever I need some help is very reassuring. One on one counseling has been the best option for me and I highly recommend both Stephan and Better Help.
