About Me
I am a counselor who has worked in the field in multiple states since 1985. I have been certified and licensed as a mental health counselor in Kentucky since 1998, the initial year of this process in Kentucky. I have been part of the Disaster Mental Health Counseling program with the American Red Cross, Served as a Clinical Counselor and Supervisor in several states and taught in university settings in undergraduate and graduate human services and counseling programs. My areas of specialty include relationship issues, LGBT issues, disability issues, mood disorders, trauma counseling, grief and loss counseling, career counseling and basic life events anyone may encounter.
My focus is that counseling is a shared process where communication between the parties is equally important. I won't find your answers, but will do my best to listen, share and provide input to help you find them. I do not follow one school or theory of counseling stringently and prefer to deal on a person by person basis in formulating the plan and approach.
If you want to work with someone who is open, empathetic and experienced, yet will challenge you to look within yourself for critical analysis and self-praise, let's see if we are a good fit.

Dr. Barnes is compassionate but straightforward, and has helped me get through some difficult times recently.
Dr. Barnes is sooo great and helpful! She knows what she is doing very well! I feel that I am so lucky to have her with me! Best mental health care even!
She’s an incredibly good listener, super honest on her insight, doesn’t beat the bush around, and asks questions that really make me see things I had not been able to. I am very fortunate to have Dr. Barnes in my life.

Dr Barnes, is very laid back and contemporary. She listens very well, reiterates and builds on conversation. Understanding of the mind and how it works. She provides mindful worksheets and activities that keep you involved and growing. I recommend her to everyone!
She was very easy to talk to right from the start and seems like she knows when to listen and when to interject. I like her demeanor right off and her insights so far have been good. Looking forward to delving deeper into my needs.
Dr. Barnes is a fantastic professional. She has helped me so much in such a short amount of time. She is personable, and provides the safe space for me to open up like I haven't before. When working through tough topics, she takes the time to ensure I feel heard, validated, and understood. I almost gave up on trying to find a counselor that was a good fit for me but I'm glad I didn't. She is top notch
She is an amazing therapist.
I sincerely enjoy our sessions together. Stephanie is authentic, honest and an excellent listener. It is apparent that not only does she care for her clients, she is nonjudgmental. She also has a sense of humor which is rare to find with therapist.
Stephanie is one of a kind. If you have the opportunity to work with her, consider yourself very lucky.
Dr. Barnes, is exceptionally honest and really is able to assess how they can best help or provide guidance in your life. I sincerely appreciate the open ear and honest approach. Thank you for helping me when I felt lost. After just one session I felt like things might actually be ok, not many people can do that in an hour. Thank you and looking forward to continuing my healing process with you.
Listens actively and pulls out what is most important in such a way it heals on the spot. She always understands queer issues and that is rare to find in a counselor.
