About me
I am returning to the platform after some time off for a dual liver and kidney transplant. I am grateful for this life saving procedure. It has taught me so much about struggles and life beyond what I already knew
I am a counselor who has worked in the field in multiple states since 1985. I have been certified and licensed as a mental health counselor in Kentucky since 1998, the initial year of this process in Kentucky. I have been part of the Disaster Mental Health Counseling program with the American Red Cross, Served as a Clinical Counselor and Supervisor in several states and taught in university settings in undergraduate and graduate human services and counseling programs.
My areas of specialty include relationship issues, LGBT issues, disability issues, mood disorders, trauma counseling, grief and loss counseling, career counseling and basic life events anyone may encounter.
My focus is that counseling is a shared process where communication between the parties is equally important. I won't find your answers, but will do my best to listen, share and provide input to help you find them. I do not follow one school or theory of counseling stringently and prefer to deal on a person by person basis in formulating the plan and approach.
If you want to work with someone who is open, empathetic and experienced, yet will challenge you to look within yourself for critical analysis and self-praise, let's see if we are a good fit.

Reviews
These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Dr. Stephanie Barnes. We don’t pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.
Dr.Barnes is funny, caring and always have your best interest at heart.
Amazing. I have felt beyond comfortable and understood by Dr. Barnes. She makes an effort to understand what you are going through and her main goal is to support you through your healing journey!
Dr. Barnes has been fantastic. She does an excellent job connecting with her clients and I appreciate her individual approach.
Dr. Barnes is such a phenomenal therapist! She’s so funny and kind and has a great way of telling you what you need to hear in a way that you can receive it.
I am impressed with the accurate matching process that Better Help was able to provide. Dr. Barnes and I were able to quickly “click” from the first session and she shows compassion, patience, common sense and professionalism. Dr. Barnes is genuine and has a sense of humor. Overall, Dr. Barnes has a Ph.D she is not stuffy!
She’s an excellent therapist!!!
Dr. Barnes is so easy to speak to! It feels like I’ve known her a long time and I’ve only had a few sessions. I’m excited to continue working with her!
I really appreciate Dr. Barnes and her insight. I’ve only had two sessions and have found both very helpful. I am dealing with a child’s suicide and this will take a long time for sure.
A great counselor with a sense of humor. Her comments resonate with me, her advice is dead on and she is easy to connect with.
Stephanie is very kind and down to earth. She feels like a friend you are talking to.
Dr Barnes is very intelligent and very comfortable to talk to. She is clearly listening as she provides some really good feedback. Sometimes, she just let's you talk your way out of it... I highly recommend trying Dr Barnes... and see how you click!
Awesome therapist highly recommend
Dr. Barnes has an awesome sense of humor which I completely appreciate. I feel supported and can always trust that she will be honest with me about the things I'm dealing with. She has also helped me formulate tactics for dealing with my anxiety which has been super helpful for my healing process. I highly recommend working with Dr. Barnes.
Dr. Barnes is a great therapist.
My counselor is always there and great with advice she’s understanding and helpful but always professional she’s great
Stepahine has been a great help to me! She helped me understand myself better than before. I’m glad to have her as my therapist!
Dr. Barnes is amazing. After every session I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I look forward to our sessions and appreciate her support and advice.
I knew Dr. Barnes was an amazing fit for me after only a few sessions with her. She adapts her approach to suit each client individually, and with her I have felt like an actual human rather than a list of mental health issues (which has been my issue with previous therapists/psychiatrists before I gave BetterHelp a try). She always offers meaningful observations and relevant suggestions that help me manage whatever life throws at me. Meeting with her almost weekly for more than six months now has made a world of a difference in my life, and I am incredibly grateful to now be at a point where I am sharing successes and excitement with her rather than just working through stress and anxiety.
Dr. Barnes is great so far. We are very early in our relationship and I think it is premature to ask this question.
Dr. Barnes is the bomb.com. Words can't tell you how much I appreciate her help over the last few months to really get myself out of a funk. She helps simplify things, is direct and to the point when I need it, but is also super kind and funny. Highly recommended!
She is amazing. She has helped me so much.
I love using Betterhelp and have been enjoying my experience with Dr. Barnes.
Dr. Barnes is very down to earth and a straight shooter. Her directness is very refreshing and welcomed to help advance the counseling process. I would suggest Dr. Barnes to any of my friends or colleagues looking for a competent and compassionate counselor.
Dr. Barnes is great. I enjoy her help and our conversations.
Dr. Barnes is friendly, compassionate and non-judgemental. She is a great listener and always treats me and my beliefs with respect. I feel like she tailors my therapy to the specific needs of my unusual and nontraditional challenges quite effectively. She has had a huge positive effect on my life even though I have only been seeing her for a short time. She's also pretty funny.
The simplest thing I can say is that speaking with Dr. Barnes always makes me feel better.
Dr. Barnes is compassionate but straightforward, and has helped me get through some difficult times recently.
Dr. Barnes is sooo great and helpful! She knows what she is doing very well! I feel that I am so lucky to have her with me! Best mental health care even!
She’s an incredibly good listener, super honest on her insight, doesn’t beat the bush around, and asks questions that really make me see things I had not been able to. I am very fortunate to have Dr. Barnes in my life.
So far my sessions with Dr. Barnes ( Stephanie) have been very pleasant. It’s like talking to a friend who is wise and has your best interest at heart.

Dr. Barnes knows how to make me laugh and understands me. She is very experienced in her work.
Dr Barnes, is very laid back and contemporary. She listens very well, reiterates and builds on conversation. Understanding of the mind and how it works. She provides mindful worksheets and activities that keep you involved and growing. I recommend her to everyone!
She was very easy to talk to right from the start and seems like she knows when to listen and when to interject. I like her demeanor right off and her insights so far have been good. Looking forward to delving deeper into my needs.
Dr. Barnes is a fantastic professional. She has helped me so much in such a short amount of time. She is personable, and provides the safe space for me to open up like I haven't before. When working through tough topics, she takes the time to ensure I feel heard, validated, and understood. I almost gave up on trying to find a counselor that was a good fit for me but I'm glad I didn't. She is top notch
I sincerely enjoy our sessions together. Stephanie is authentic, honest and an excellent listener. It is apparent that not only does she care for her clients, she is nonjudgmental. She also has a sense of humor which is rare to find with therapist.
Stephanie is one of a kind. If you have the opportunity to work with her, consider yourself very lucky.
Dr. Barnes, is exceptionally honest and really is able to assess how they can best help or provide guidance in your life. I sincerely appreciate the open ear and honest approach. Thank you for helping me when I felt lost. After just one session I felt like things might actually be ok, not many people can do that in an hour. Thank you and looking forward to continuing my healing process with you.
Listens actively and pulls out what is most important in such a way it heals on the spot. She always understands queer issues and that is rare to find in a counselor.
