About Me

Hello! My name is Susan, and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) from Northern Illinois. I am happy that you are viewing my profile because it shows that you are taking an interest in taking care of you. The journey that you are on can seem daunting and scary but can have the absolute best result. I can help you to find peace within yourself by helping you to untangle the jumble of thoughts in your mind and present your thoughts in a different way. This is the most important journey that you can undertake because it is a journey for yourself. Congratulations on taking the first step.

I have a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Psychology from the University of Wisconsin - Madison and I obtained my Master’s degree in Social Work (M.S.W.) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I have been working in the field since 2006 and have worked with a wide variety of populations from incarcerated men to intellectually disabled adults to child victims of domestic violence. I practice a generalist style, which sounds fancier than explaining that I will use whatever therapeutic style seems right for you and your situation. I excel at helping you to understand you, identifying behavioral and thought patterns that may be keeping you stuck.

I have helped people that are struggling with transitions, struggling with mood disorders, struggling with understanding the world through the lens of autism, people struggling with symptoms of psychosis, and people that are struggling to match their personalities to the current situation that they are in. I will work for you to be star of your own story and feel like you deserve it. Please take a look at what my previous clients have said about me.

I liked Susan from the start. She is engaging and funny and can push the conversation in a constructive direction.

Within the week or so that I have been with Susan, she has provided me everything that I need to feel the most comfortable while I better my mental health. I cannot wait to contine to work with Susan, and see just how great of help she will be for me. I could not be any happier with my counselor match!

I had a great time working with Susan! From the very first session she was helping me articulate areas in myself I wanted to work on and helping me identify workable goals with fair expectations.

I found Susan to be very easy to talk to and that she would often ask intuitive questions that led me to look at myself in new ways. While it was clear that Susan was helping me towards my goals and would sometimes give me homework to work on myself, I never felt that it came with any pressure to do this in a particular way or to do it at all if it wasn't useful. I think she does a really good job of offering her expertise in a way that is very palatable and mutable and as someone who is still figuring a lot out about my mutable self, this was super welcome!

She is amazing and honestly knows her stuff. She brought to light so much stuff that was holding me down and gave me effective ways to work on them

I worked with Susan for four months. When I began, I was an anxious mess. Susan gave me sound strategies for processing and working through anxious thoughts, so I could focus on the things that mattered to me most. Highly recommend Susan for anyone looking for help with anxiety.

Susan is a wonderful therapist. She has really taken the time to get to know me and my struggles and is incredibly honest and supportive. She is helping me to see myself in a new light by guiding me to understand where my beliefs about myself are rooted, and to work towards establishing new frames of mind. Her demeanor is friendly, truthful, and has a healthy dose of humor, which makes tackling difficult topics more manageable.

Susan was my first counselor and I couldn’t imagine anyone better to have started my therapy journey with than her! She was kind, supportive and patient with me. But she also made sure to call me out on on bs and when I was exhibiting self destructive behaviors or actions. Susan is a great listener and gives great advice, especially when she tells you stories from her own life. Susan validated my thoughts and feelings and always made sure to put me first in the session. Susan got to know me so well she could tell when I was having a bad week and was ready to listen. I could always breathe a sigh of relief when I saw her face in our video chats!

Susan Carlson is amazing and I couldn’t recommend her more highly. I’ve been in therapy for years, and she has done more in her few months with me than others did in years.

Susan is simply the best. She does the best job of empathizing with me and helping me get to the root cause of the problem, but also has a very welcoming and warm personality. Her most helpful attribute to me is her foundation in reality; swears, shitty stories, all are on the table and they’re helping me find peace in this fucking society again.

She’s helped me a lot even in a short period of time. She makes it about me. She makes me feel comfortable with myself and my feelings.
