About Me

Hello!

Thank you for taking the time to read my profile. I’m Susan Shafer, a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor for the state of North Carolina and a 500hr Registered Yoga Instructor. I hold a Masters Degree in Community Counseling from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and have been providing therapy for over 11 years. I have experience working with children, adolescents, adults and families in a variety of settings. My areas of specialty include working with those struggling with anxiety, depression, life transitions, grief/loss, ADHD and trauma related hardships.

My counseling approach is eclectic and I use approaches that incorporate effective wellness practices with traditional psychotherapy including CBT, Mindfulness and Emotional Freedom Techniques. I believe in creating a space that allows clients to express themselves openly and without judgement. My work focuses on helping clients to connect to their inner strengths and increase their awareness of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. At times, I incorporate yoga practices to provide educational techniques that allow clients to connect the body and mind through breath and movement.

It takes courage and trust to begin counseling and I appreciate your willingness to allow me to be a part of this journey. Together, we will identify your goals and skills to help you overcome the challenges you are experiencing or have experienced. One of my greatest joys as a therapist is to witness individuals resolve issues and gravitate toward a life filled with more internal peace and joy. When you are ready to begin, I am here to walk the next steps with you!

Simply stated, rockstar therapist. Does an excellent job pairing techniques and strategies with issues in a practical manner. Open and affirming in the way you would expect a mental health professional to be.

To say that Susan has helped me improve my life and understand myself better would be an understatement. She perfectly walks the line of listening and explaining and always knows which way to guide me when I’m feeling overwhelmed or confused. She is encouraging, understanding, and extremely intuitive. She never judges me and is so patient when I’m feeling hesitant to open up. I feel so lucky to have Susan in my life and a part of my journey; She has guided me and helped me work through some really difficult and important things and I feel closer to the person I want to become than I ever have in my life.

I have only been seeing Susan Shafer a couple months, but I have made a lot of progress into my trauma therapy already. She makes me feel heard, respected, and truly understands the goals I have, both long and short term. I'm happy I have been paired with such a professional!

Susan is the best therapist I have ever had and I am so happy I was matched with her. She challenges me to see things differently and understand my own implicit learned behaviors and thought patterns. It has tremendously helped my communication in my relationships and what I think about myself.

As a professional who works in mental health , I have found my expectations for a therapist to be higher than the average person. It has been refreshing to be paired with Susan. She is timely, compassionate, and very resourceful. She is truly an expert in connecting thoughts to feelings and behaviors. She will validate you while challenging you to take on new perspectives and/or small practices to better your emotional, spiritual, and physical well being. She respects boundaries, will never force or push me into something I am not ready to dive into. I always look forward to our sessions, I give her 5 stars!

Susan was my second recommended counselor & I couldn't be more please with how BetterHelp has paired us. After reading up on her background I had a strong indication that she's exactly what I need in order to get through my rough patch. She speaks my lingo, she knows exactly what it is that I need to hear, & shes extremely responsive via messages although she does prefer to do video or phone calls & I can understand why. But basing on my current lifestyle it's better for me to respond by messages but do hope I get to hop on a phone/video call with her if that time arises. I personally recommend her 10/10, but would be mindful about whether or not this or any counselor fits your lifestyle.
