A FORWARD-THINKING, EXPERIENCED THERAPIST
I’m licensed in the states of Washington, Utah, and Arizona. I have 30 years of clinical experience working with adults, adolescents, children, couples, and families.
I lived and worked in Seattle for many years. In 2016 I moved to southern Utah for the mountains and red rocks I love. My move was for my own mental health and early planning toward an eventual retirement. I'm not ready to retire! I love the work I do. Years ago I chose to be of service. I'm grateful I did that. I have a deep respect for personal struggles. I also have great confidence in the therapy process based on the transformations I've witnessed in the lives of the men, women, and young people with whom I've been privileged to work.
My style is active and direct. I have experience working with high-functioning corporate professionals, artists, college students, people who have been in therapy for years but seek a more natural and integrative approach. I have clients who are therapists themselves. I also work with people new to therapy who wish to build a more solid foundation for their emotional health. The heart of what I do is create and protect the space for clients to address personal issues and whatever barriers are keeping them from moving forward in life.
My approach is eclectic. I'm trained in trauma-informed, evidence-based approaches. I use rational-emotive cognitive behavioral, DBT, and MBCT, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. I've taught the MBSR, Jon Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness-based stress reduction course. I love this work. It's one of the best tools. I integrate elements of it when applicable. It's effective when working with anxiety as well as targeting the very roots of addictive behaviors. I tailor our work and our dialog to create a treatment plan to meet your specific needs. I weave an element of psych/education throughout the work because I believe this helps you apply what we are talking about in sessions and will empower you to create the most effective and lasting changes you're seeking.
I advocate living life with compassion and integrity. Change is hard. Most of us resist change for fear of what's unknown in the future. I understand it takes courage to reach out for help. If you decide to work with me, bring your grit and your honesty, and most importantly a strong commitment to yourself. I’m here to help.

She is phenomenal. Caring and sincere, makes an obvious effort.
Amazing listener and communicative. She is very kind and empathetic. I appreciate all of her help!
There are a ton of cliche terms that come to mind when describing people. I can’t help but to choose one of them in describing Teri. She embodies what it means to be “down to earth”. I truly did get BetterHelp. I had some very particular things I wanted in seeking a counselor that is right for me. Sure, not every counselor is right for a person but I would venture to say that Teri could connect in more ways than you may think of given the chance. Thank you BetterHelp and thank you my friend Teri.
Teri is so wonderful—she is a great listener, very warm and understanding, and is not afraid to jump right into tough topics. I’ve only had 3 sessions so far and I am already feeling an improvement!
Working with Teri during my post-natal period was a fantastic experience. She was able to create the space I needed to share my vulnerabilities and guided me to insights about myself that had enormous positive impact on my mindset and life. I would definitely work with her again on any future challenges and highly recommend her to anyone looking for a caring, skilled professional.
We are just starting meetings - so far so good!
I really enjoy my therapy sessions with Teri Nielsen. She shows genuine concern, is gentle in her approach, and very helpful with giving me a different perspective on things. When you are in the thick of things it is hard to see a situation for what it is. She helps me with this without being invasive, which I appreciate very much. They say you have to find a therapist whom you "click" with. I definitely feel like this is the case with Teri Nielsen.
Teri has been wonderful and very responsive in helping me identify, understand, and combat the issues I’ve been facing.
