I honor differences in culture, gender, religion, race, lifestyles and beliefs. I welcome clients who want to recover from pain they experienced because of their race, gender, beliefs, or neuro-divergent way of thinking. I am presently living in the desert southwest. I enjoy traveling, writing, and creating things with pen and paper, yarn, beads, and clay. I have personal practice of mindfulness meditation and qigong. I am a deeply spiritual person. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I live and practice in the state of Alaska. I have a wonderful plant. This plant is very tenacious-it has to thrive in a room filled with Alaskan light during the winter, so that means it has to work hard to find enough solar energy to grow and thrive. Recently I noticed the plant was stretching out its stems and leaves far past its location-up to the window to find light on its own. I was inspired to watch the plant seek and find what it needed, and that is exactly the way I think about therapy-both in the inspiring pursuit of “light/insight” and my enjoyment of getting to be a part of the growth I was trained in clinical social work at Portland State University’s Graduate School of Social Work. I believe in social justice in all things and that means in therapeutic approaches as well. Before I had a “real” degree I studied with peers to learn radical psychiatry from a collective of transactional analysis practitioners originating in Berkeley (Bob Schewebel, Claude Steiner), but enacted in Portland Oregon- where I lived the bulk of my life. It was a politicizing education about the role of therapists and the importance of incorporating racism, sexism, ageism and class into my interventions and awareness. Since then I’ve learned traditional modalities for therapeutic competency including CBT-cognitive behavioral therapy, DBT dialectical behavior therapy-both approaches being helpful for anyone with anxiety, stress and depression. I was trained in family systems theory in school and I am versed in the theories of recovery –both the 12-step programs and its counterpoint-Rational Recovery-an approach for folks who are not religiously inclined. Some of John Gottman’s work with couples and Michelle Weiner Davis inform my approach to marital counseling. I’ve worked with self harming teens/tweens and used DBT tools to assist with those issues. Later I studied Attachment theory and practice and worked in the field of adoption and parenting, and became an adoptive parent myself. Additionally I worked in the field of cancer care with children and families. I can offer you experience in coping with this difficult process with your family. Recently I’ve worked with service members and their families -which may seem incongruent given my earlier orientation-but working with this culture has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The experience of stretching my assumptions has been a surprising growth process. For me as a clinician there is nothing more exciting than discovering skewed assumptions, and being gifted with the opportunity to shift my perceptions. Utilizing trauma informed principles and process is another area of practice I can offer. My social justice values still inform my work, but now I bring a lifetime of training and experience to that orientation. Cultural competency has been a driving force in my life and that is reflected in my daily life as the only white person in my family. I am also committed to supporting LGBTQ communities and am 100% gay-positive in my practice. Areas of interest include special issues for artists, spiritually driven quandaries, LGBTQ issues /sexual orientation issues, transitions, grief and bereavement, attachment, adoption, military transitions and issues, sexual assault and domestic abuse (survivors)- among so many others. My goal is to assist you with shining the light on your path. Sometimes that’s all it takes.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor LPC) in both Alaska and Colorado, and I hold a current Master Addiction Counselor national certification (MAC.) I have many years of mental health, emotional health, and addictive behavior counseling experience. I work with clients who struggle with a wide range of concerns that include depression, anxiety, psychosis, substance abuse/addictive behaviors, lifespan developmental issues, and PTSD stemming from various traumatic life experiences. My counseling style is gentle, non-confrontive, honest and non-directive, while assisting clients to develop a path to initiate positive change in their lives. The goal is to assist clients to reach their highest desired personal and professional potential. I ensure each client has a comprehensive honest and thorough assessment, followed by a relevant and realistic goal-centered treatment plan jointly developed by both client and me. The treatment plan is treated as a fluid document that can be reassessed and goals changed if needed to bring about the desired outcome. A thorough and openly honest assessment expedites the treatment process so progress towards working through personal issues/struggles can be seen as attainable and achievable. My personal and professional goal has always been to never chastise or talk down to anyone. Please know that I will challenge irrational thoughts and inconsistencies (in a non-confrontational, noncondemning manner) if they appear to be blocking progress towards the client’s desired treatment outcome. My therapeutic model incorporates various therapy techniques and skill-building approaches. These approaches include motivational interviewing, active listening, cognitive-behavioral, client centered, and rational-emotive therapy. All is assimilated into the treatment plan to help facilitate self-awareness, motivation to change, and self-empowerment to make the identified changes. I believe life is all about moving forward and reaching our personal and professional potential. Everyone finds themselves “stuck,” at various times along life’s journey, and not able to figure out how to get back up and start moving forward again. That is what the goal of therapy is. If this approach towards therapy appears to be a good match for you, please let me know. Sincerely, Joe M. Bray MA, MS, LPC, MAC

Is BetterHelp right for me?

One of the potentially rewarding aspects of working with a therapist is the validation and active listening they can provide. Your friends and loved ones may also be available to listen, but you may feel that they may lack the skills to provide objective guidance. Counselors are trained to respond to various concerns, symptoms, and mental health conditions.

Therapists in your city can support you toward a healthier emotional state, regardless of your mental health, life concerns, or healing needs. While supporting individuals in developing healthier habits, another good benefit of therapy in Golovin is having an understanding, safe space with a non-judgmental party who can support you through challenging experiences.

Should I find a Golovin therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what it might entail. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or specific condition. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. A Golovin licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find with a counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Is therapy worth it?

Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. An experienced clinician can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based licensed clinician in Golovin, Alaska can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Counseling with an online Golovin provider

Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
