30 years of experience offering psychology treatment

Hello, I’m Veronica McKay and I’ve spent the past thirty years as a practicing Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I’ve worked in the United States and Germany. I recently retired but find that I still have the time and desire to help people looking for answers and guidance when life’s waters become turbulent.

My experience ranges from treating children with emotional and developmental issues to assisting adults with issues of anxiety, depression and surviving the trauma of sexual assault. In 2008 I began working with the military, treating active duty military returning from combat and helping their families cope with and understand the soldiers’ struggles. I spent eleven years working with service members and military families facing all the problems that often accompany long family separations and combat tours, from PTSD to substance abuse to shifting domestic management stress.

I have been trained and practiced in EMDR for treating PTSD, and in 2017 was trained in Accelerated Resolution Therapy. In my career I have worked as an on-call mental health evaluator for emergency behavioral health and substance abuse services. I currently work with several veteran’s organizations in continuing the work I did with active duty soldiers. I welcome the opportunity to work with you in identifying your personal goals and assisting you in the process of moving forward in your life.

I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor who has been in the helping profession for over 18 years. I received my licenses to practice in 2011 prior to that I was a case manager for at risk youth ad individuals with developmental disabilities. I have always enjoyed helping people realize their best self. My personal theoretical orientation to counseling is an integrative approach based on person-centered view that the relationship between the counselor and client is important for healthy change. I will try to enable the client to become more fully and creatively alive and to become free from the blocks and unfinished business that may diminish satisfaction, fulfillment, and growth, and to experiment with new ways of being. I also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is an effective approach for many clients. I also believe that a Cognitive (thought process) approach coupled with behavior changes is effective for many clients. I also acknowledge the importance of the client’s spiritual orientation and incorporate their belief system as a part of the therapeutic process. I am always striving to be my best self and I enjoy assisting others in discovering the positional that they have within. We have the ability to have total wellness, I want to assist you in attaining total wellness. It takes courage and bravery to take that first step towards change, if you are ready to take that first step I am happy to help guide, support and encourage along the way. I look forward to working with you and helping you create a life full of happiness.

45 years of experience offering psychology treatment

I have been in the field of helping people since 1976 when I became involved with a juvenile first time offender and "ungovernable" youth program. From there, I have worked with children and families in a variety of situations. Throughout my 45 years of experience, I have been a licensed medical social worker where I worked with home health/hospice; as a hospital based trauma, surgery, and orthopedic social worker; and as an in patient, intensive outpatient, and general outpatient psychiatric social worker. The combination of skills has led to where I am now- a generalist with a vast array of experience and training. One area that I enjoy working with is persons in life transition. Often, life throws us a curve and the plans that we thought we had suddenly change. Life's circumstances can be rewarding and also cruel, leaving us confused, stuck, anxious, sad, in a rut and not sure what to do. During some of these changes, we can get back on track and resume our course, but others may require a bit more adaptation and ultimately redefinition of ourselves. An example is when one becomes physically or medically disabled. The loss of identity, sense of usefulness, and belonging (to name only a few) can leave us devastated and asking, "WHY". I can't promise that I have the answers to life's challenges, but maybe, we can explore that journey, be it a new one for you, and come up with some skills to improve your coping with your life's situation. I believe that life is a journey, let's take it one step at a time.

Recovery is a long and soulful process. Finding a counselor with whom to collaborate on your personalized journey to a more whole and independent life is like a hero who needs a good sidekick. If you choose to work with me on your recovery and healing journey I will be a faithful sidekick and you will be the hero of your story. I will encourage you, give you feedback, share hard truths with you, maybe even confront you, give you sage counsel, and essentially be part of your tribe. But like every hero's journey, at the end you will have to face your fears without me. But you will have changed, grown, become larger than your anxieties, rewritten your story by replacing words of doubt, pain and languish with words that more accurately and compassionately represent you and the growth you have worked so hard for. I am a psychotherapist here in the mountains of North Carolina. Since I graduated from Montreat College I have achieved full licensure (LCMHC) and I have almost completed my Licensed Substance Abuse Counselor (LSAC-A). For the past 3 years I have worked in a recovery based, person-centered therapeutic community with incredible individuals who suffer from major mental health challenges and in some cases addictions as well. Empathy, warmth, humor and confrontation are my strong suits in the therapeutic relationship. My specialty is in treating disorders of overcontrol. As in, so much self-control it gets in the way of expressing yourself, or gets in the way of living a meaningful life. Maladaptive perfectionism falls into this category, along with all-or-nothing thinking, resistance to feedback, loneliness, anxiety, treatment resistant depression and OCD. My preferred modality is Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy, I also use Narrative Therapy, Eco Therapy, Existential Therapy and I do Brainspotting, Natural Flow EMDR, and mindfulness. I would be honored to get to know you. May your recovery be profound, may your recovery lead to wholeness, may your recovery sustain. Respectfully, Thomas Wilder MA, NCC, LCMHC, LSAC-A

The average price of an in-person therapy session in the US with most therapists is $100 to $200 per hour. Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what it might entail. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or specific condition. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback. A Askewville licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find with a Askewville counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?

Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. An experienced clinician can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based licensed clinician in Askewville, North Carolina can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

Askewville has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online sessions to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.

Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?

The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
