Welcome to BetterHelp! I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the states of North and South Carolina. I graduated from Liberty University in 2013. My approach to counseling is very eclectic and person centered. I am experience in the utilization of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Family Therapy (FT), Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), and I also assist client with implementing forms of meditation into their daily lifestyle. My aim is to empower each person I am allowed to serve, and to assist them with understanding that each person has the ability to heal, cope, and/or adapt despite life's challenges. The power to create change is within each one of us, and my job is to assist you with that process. My counseling style is non-judgmental, multi-culturally sensitive, and empathic. I take a holistic approach to counseling in that we will consider internal and external influences on your thoughts feelings and emotions. When considering our feelings and emotions there must be consideration take to the mind and body connections and how they affect one another. Our relationships and family of origin also have tremendous effects on us because we don't exist in a bubble, but within systems and relationships which must be considered. It is my goal to empower you. Working with BetterHelp is a convenient way for you to receive the help and support that you need, right from home or wherever you are with a phone, tablet, or computer. It will be important for you to understand that while there are many benefits to receiving counseling, there are risks associated with it. Talking about difficult things may make you feel worse than when you started, but if you keep up with the commitment and do the work, it will get better over time. I look forward to working with you!

46 years offering treatment

I am Dr. Tom Davis. I have a PhD in Counseling Psychology from Duke University and am a Licensed Psychologist with 46 years of clinical experience. I practiced in the same medical facility for 35 of those years and treated the entire age range from age 3 to age 94. A major benefit of practicing at the same facility for all that time was that I often treated the same clients from childhood up through adulthood. It was not uncommon for me to have treated three generations of the same family. This gave me a rare and highly valuable vantage point regarding the long-term development of a client as an individual and as a member of their intergenerational family system. It also allowed me to treat adults in individual, couples and family modalities as they developed over the years. In our therapeutic relationship, I view you as the expert and me as the professional. Your expertise is the wealth of self-knowledge and personal experiences that you bring to therapy. As the professional, my job is to help you organize this expertise into an actionable form that you can use to manage your life more effectively. Over my decades of practice, I have honed a treatment approach that I find produces the most efficient and effective method of improvement. During the first session, I work with you to define the problem(s) that need attention and devise a practical, problem-oriented treatment plan to resolve these problem(s). We will focus on your thoughts, behaviors and emotions, in that order. In general, thoughts determine how you behave and behavior determines how you feel. When thoughts become more organized, behavior becomes more productive and both contribute to more positive emotions. I use homework assignments to make the best use of treatment between sessions. With child and adolescent clients, I use an age-appropriate version of the above treatment plan and include family members as helpful change agents for the child. The remaining sessions are spent working through the identified problems and other issues that may surface. The ultimate goal is for you to feel secure in your ability to handle current and future problems. I have conducted psychological testing on over 5,000 individual clients. I have tested for depression, anxiety, dementias, brain injuries, personality development, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Learning Disabilities and clients’ ability to handle a variety of surgical interventions. Therefore, if you have had psychological testing, I am able to understand the test results and to provide guidance based on those results. My overriding goal for myself is for you to end each session with a better understanding of yourself than you had when you began the session. My overriding goals for you are 1.) to gain mastery over your life that in turn enhances your self-esteem, reduces worry and leads to more positive feelings; and 2.) to have improved skills to deal with the ups and downs of daily living. After each session, I send follow up notes that summarize what was covered/learned that day, what home work assignments were generated and what our future direction should include. My office hours are Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9:00 AM until 5:30 PM. Specialties: Depression Anxiety Panic attacks PTSD Adolescent issues Marital and family issues Geriatric issues General adjustment issues

Choosing a therapist is a deeply personal decision. You want someone who will listen without judgment, understand what you’re going through, and help you make real changes—not simply tell you to “think positive” or “just let it go.” That’s where I come in. I believe therapy should be a place where you can take off the mask, tell the truth about how you’re feeling, and know that you will be met with compassion—not judgment. My approach combines warmth and genuine connection with practical, evidence-based strategies that you can actually use in your everyday life. As a therapist specializing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), I help clients understand how their thoughts, emotions, and behaviors influence one another. We’ll work together to recognize patterns that may be contributing to anxiety, depression, self-doubt, or feeling stuck—and develop healthier ways of responding. But therapy with me isn't about checking boxes or giving you a list of things you should be doing. It’s about you. Your experiences. Your struggles. Your goals. Your story. I’ll meet you where you are while helping you move toward where you want to be. If anxiety has you constantly overthinking, if depression has made it difficult to find motivation, or if you’ve spent so much time taking care of everyone else that you’ve forgotten how to take care of yourself, you don’t have to figure it all out alone. I want therapy to be a space where you can learn, grow, heal, and ultimately become more confident in your ability to handle life’s challenges. You are not your anxiety. You are not your depression. You are not your worst day. There is more to your story—and I would be honored to help you discover what comes next. If you’re ready to make yourself a priority, I’m ready to walk alongside you.

If you're reaching out to a therapist, you're needing something better in your life. You're not willing to go on the way things are, and you have the hope and determination that things can and must change. You need someone who can help you achieve that change. You don't need someone who will just tell you what you want to hear, or who will listen but not know what to do. You need someone who has the ability to get you to that better place in your life. I have the training, compassion, and experience to help you get there. For couples, I'm trained in Gottman Couples Therapy and Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. These are two of the best-researched, most effective couples therapy methods out there, and I have seen beautiful results in my clients. I also see many individuals, as well as families. I've also been there. I know what depression feels like, and I've struggled with a difficult marriage and divorce. I've been to therapy myself, learned a lot, done the work, and have gotten to my own better place. My passion and my reason for becoming a therapist is to help others benefit from what I've learned. My training has given me the skills to do that. I won't judge you, and you won't hear, "Well, just get over it!" from me. If you want Christian counseling, let me know. If you prefer non-religious therapy, I am comfortable with that as well. Either way, you will have my full attention and my best effort.

Finding a therapist near you in Rockford, North Carolina starts with matching to a licensed professional who fits your needs, schedule, and goals. Why work with a licensed therapist near you?

A licensed therapist can offer evidence-based approaches, a steady space to talk, and guidance tailored to your situation. In North Carolina, online therapy can make that care more accessible, since sessions happen from home or wherever you are, without the need to travel to an office. This can help if your schedule is full, if travel is difficult, or if you simply prefer a more discreet setting. You can learn more about what a therapist does on the therapist role page.

Online therapy can be especially helpful for people living across North Carolina, where access to in-person mental health care may vary by location.

What concerns can therapists help with?

Therapists on BetterHelp may draw on approaches such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), depending on your needs and goals. You can explore support for specific concerns on pages such as generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, and eating disorders.

In-person therapy takes place at an office and may involve travel and set appointment windows. Both formats can support meaningful progress, so the right choice often comes down to what fits your life.
