"Life without change is not living; To be uncomfortable means that change is right around the corner!" I believe these words wholeheartedly as every individual arrives at a crossroads that determine whether they move forward, backward or remain stagnant. I work alongside those who may be within a crossroad in life that has them questioning which direction to choose. In my work as a Therapist, my clinical training and experience encompasses depression, couples enrichment, grief/loss, separation/divorce, relationship issues, and other emotional/interpersonal disturbances. I specialize in trauma such as sexual abuse, domestic violence, and death/illness. As a Therapist, I subscribe to trauma-informed strength based, Cognitive/Emotive Behavioral and Gestalt models of therapies, believing in the importance and connection of choice, empowerment, thinking and feeling for creating long-lasting change within individuals and their varying "parts of self". Through exploring your sense of meaning and empowering your "choices", I can help you gain the ability to achieve personal growth, autonomy, improved relationships, regulated emotions, increased self-esteem, clarified self-identity, coping skills, increased communication and problem-solving skills, decreased anxiety and depression, improved lifestyle, and a deeper sense of self-worth.

I offer adult individual therapy, specializing in working with the effects of trauma, rape, military sexual trauma, life stress, and transitions. My clinical work includes helping people connect with their authentic self to build inner resilience and self-awareness, reduce anxiety/depression, and improve relationships. Therapy is a collaborative process that allows one to be fully seen and deeply heard while growing empathy and understanding of self through examining past wounds, current stressors, and challenging themes that keep showing up unresolved. My work utilizes a variety of modalities tailored to each client, with a strong focus on establishing a warm and nonjudgmental atmosphere. Therapy encourages the undoing of patterns and thus requires a safe place to learn and practice new ideas at a pace that feels right for you. My approach is built on compassion and acceptance. It would be an honor to walk this path with clients as they develop self-worth, relationship stability, and trust.

30 years of experience as a mental health therapist

My full name is James Phillip Harmon but I generally use my middle name, Phillip or Phil; however, I am not too fussy about this. I live in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and have worked in both in-patient and outpatient settings as a Licensed Professional Counselor for just over 30 years. These settings have allowed me to work with people who are experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, abuse and addiction issues, pretty much general practice. My initial counseling education was in Adlerian Psychology. This foundation has been strengthened and expanded with later training in Marsha Linehan's Dialectical Behavior Therapy. Alfred Adler was a social psychiatrist who taught that all human behavior has a purpose that makes sense to the individual. He taught that we develop a personal understanding and beliefs about life that we use in our efforts to address the challenges of finding where we belong in society, finding how we can best contribute to society and in establishing and maintaining relationships. Adlerians believe that we all have what are called "mistaken beliefs" things that are true because we believe them but are only true to us, not in the more general context of society as a whole. A more contemporary approach, that in my opinion builds upon some of what Adler taught, is Marsha Linehan's Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). This approach sees the individual as being the expert on and about themselves. Again, we have mistaken beliefs that are our truths and the issue becomes adjusting these beliefs, if we choose to do so, to help us respond in a more effective manner to the challenges life presents. Therapy is something that happens between two equal partners, not a technique that is imposed. The therapist and client may have very different beliefs and opinions about what is happeneing. Both are correct; they simply disagree. The best solution to a problem is the one that is most effective for helping the client build the life they want to have. I believe that you have the ability, the strength and the courage to identify and make needful changes that can help you have a more satisfying life. It can a bit of work but is well worth the effort. A large part of the therapist's job is to ask questions, make comments and suggestions, maybe challenge a bit to help the client find their answers.

A mental health counselor working through their own in-person therapy practice in New Market or online may assist clients in improving healthy relationships, communication skills, working through life transitions, couples counseling, managing a mood disorder, improving coping skills, self help tips, offer life coaching, family therapy, or change in negative thinking patterns. A therapist may also provide a safe place and validation for clients experiencing emotional pain, or that simply want a psychological assessment. Verified providers can provide licensed marriage and couples therapy, tailor to individual needs, and create a therapeutic relationship as a National Certified Counselor.

How should I prepare for my first therapy session with a New Market counselor?

Before seeing your New Market therapist, prep for your session by reading to understand the therapy process. You might write a list of questions you want to ask your psychotherapist, any emotional pain you may feel, and the ways in which you hope to improve. When you attend your session, let them know if you have any concerns about therapy or feel unsure about what to talk about. They may help guide you with open-ended therapeutic questions while offering mental health services. The first session will often serve as an intake to get to know you as a person and learn why you're attending therapy in New Market.

Should I find a therapist or psychologist for therapy if I feel fine?

Some simply don't feel the need to see a psychologist. However, some people may avoid attending therapy due to stigma or preconceived notions of what therapy entails. Although psychologists often support people with mental health conditions, you do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy. You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general feedback and advice from a therapist. A New Market licensed clinical social worker may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

Gaining a new perspective on yourself through various therapies might allow you to improve your self-esteem, work through relationships, and gain a better sense of your mental health goals. The success you may find through therapy with a New Market counselor can be dependent on your process.

People may also attend therapy for specific motives, such as bullying, an autism diagnosis, a desire to learn mindfulness meditation, personality concerns, trouble with office workers, specific phobias, and many other principles that a counselor can help with.

Is mental health care and therapy with a therapist worth it?

Therapy with a licensed counselor is effective and has the power to change individuals' lives. Each client is at a different stage of their emotional healing journey in life, as each human can be unique in their personality, expression, skills, and goals. A psychologist can target various symptoms, experiences, and personalities to help you feel your best and put you on the path to healing. Unlike advice from a friend, family, or non-professional, a mental health therapist has an understanding of various disorders like ADHD and depression with many hours of experience in treating adults in their practice. For this reason, seeing an evidence based psychologist in New Market, Virginia can be worth it. Over 41 million adults in the US attend therapy services each year, showing it's a popular option and is proven to be effective.

New Market has many clinicians who practice person or client-centered individual therapy in-person and through online therapy to assist clients in their healing journey. If you opt into online therapy, you might also be able to meet with providers all over the United States and change therapists easily at any time. Many people struggling with anxiety and depression, substance abuse, body image issues, and more find therapists that are a good fit for them, feel supported, and gain further insight into their lives through internet-based therapy.

Do therapists judge you in therapy sessions during telehealth appointments?

The boundaries between you and a therapist are in place to help you and them regarding ethical concerns. Mental health professionals are held by ethical standards through the American Psychological Association (APA) and are not allowed to judge or harm their clients. If you are concerned about sharing details about yourself, feel free to withhold personal information. Their job in the therapeutic relationship is to create a safe place, help you gain a deeper understanding of your mental health, and support you. You might consider changing counselors if you don't feel safe or respected.
