About me

My name is Tom Babbitt. I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), licensed in the state of Maine. I attended Antioch New England graduate school in the early 2000’s, after which I spent a few years working with disadvantaged families in their homes on essential living skills. I did year-long internships at both the University of New England counseling center, and the Colby College counseling center, and I have been in private practice for 15 years at my home office in Brunswick, Maine, and now remotely through Telehealth.

It can be daunting, finding the right person to help you through a particular challenge you're facing—and just at the time when you may be feeling the most confused or the least trusting! Remember that it's US who are on the job interview, not you. This is a relationship where training and skill are essential, but trust is arguably most important. You aren't buying a toaster. You're doing something very hard, very brave: looking for a place to speak openly about how you're feeling, what you're thinking—a place where you might be sharing secrets you've never told a living soul. This is not the time to blindly trust the first person who comes along simply because they look the part (smokes a pipe, nods head at right moment, letters after name).

Counseling is simply you and I, meeting in a safe and comfortable space without interruption for a specified time with one goal in mind: to focus on the challenges you are facing. You will not come to take care of me, that's the beauty of it. I am a confidential advisor off the usual grid of social contacts, relatives, friends and co-workers. I am not easily shocked and am comfortable with much of life's shadow side. Counseling is a real relationship, too. A caring, very human relationship, with someone trained to listen deeply.

All the best, Tom Babbitt LCPC
