About me

My name is Thom Wilder. I have over 30 years experience as a pastoral counselor and am currently a licensed professional counselor (LPC) in Texas. I specialize in the challenges of clients who deal with chronic illness and chronic pain and am the author of Overcoming Chronic Illness, a workbook designed for both therapy groups and individuals who are facing the challenges of chronic illness of all kinds. I work with both the patients and their caregivers in accepting the difficult realities of their condition and focusing on those factors over which they have the most control. This interest and focus comes from over 20 years spent as the primary caregiver for my wife who suffers from several chronic conditions including Rheumatoid Arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, fibromyalgia and the accompanying chronic pain. This has given me a great empathy and compassion for the over 85 million Americans who suffer from some sort of chronic illness and are trying to live a full and meaningful life in spite of their health situation.

In addition to the chronic illness emphasis, I am also experienced in working with clients facing a myriad of mental health challenges including
-Depression
-Anxiety
-Stress
-Trauma
-Marriage and relationships
-Anger
-Grief
-End of life issues
-Interpersonal communication
-Compassion fatigue
-Chronic pain
-Conflict resolution
-Life choices

My Therapeutic Modalities include:
-Cognitive Behavior Thearapy
-Dialectical Behavior Therapy
-Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
-Strength-based Therapy
-Client Centered Therapy
-Solution Focused Therapy
-Mindfulness

I take an integrative approach to health. We are all biological, psychological, social, and I believe spiritual beings. To be totally healthy we must take note of the conditions in all of those areas for each of those domains has an either a positive or negative impact on each of the others. In session I work with clients on all of these areas, not just the psychological domain. I also recognize that the therapeutic relationship between the therapist and the client will determine the level of benefit for the client. As I tell all my clients, I am paid to be your counselor but I care about you for free. I would love to help you with the challenges you face as well.

Thom Wilder is the most intelligent, educated professional therapist I have ever had. After 30 years with other therapists, in patient treatment centers and out patient facilities I had given up on ever finding someone who had the experience and strength to handle my severe CPTSD, Complicated Grief, and BPD. He has listened patiently and never tuned out my devastating past. He is the first therapist to guide me out of the darkness and showed me new ways to think and live. I cannot express my happiness enough on having found him. I'm so glad I found Betterhelp and the wonderful support they provide. "Help is on the way" emails from BetterHelp always give me a sense of peace, support, and safety. I recommend it to everyone with whom I speak.

I was worried at first thinking we wouldn’t be a good match. His professionalism is top notch. Yet, he gives off an air of friendship. He’s very comforting and I’m very thankful for him.

Very timely response, thoughtful, and engaging. Gives enough room for you to talk while, also responding in a way that exposes you to new ways of thinking.
