Greetings! I’m Dr. Tomeka W. McGhee and what a privilege it is to have an opportunity to come alongside you on this journey! I am a licensed professional counselor (Alabama), certified national counselor, global career development facilitator, counselor educator and supervisor, and licensed minister. I received my doctorate from Auburn University in Counselor Education and Supervision in 2011 and a master’s degree in Counseling and Psychology from Troy University in 2008. In my ten years of experience as a therapist, I’ve served individuals and groups in settings like partial hospitalization units, adult day service centers, community agencies, and schools (elementary and secondary). The types of issues ranged from severe or chronic mental illnesses to issues like career difficulties, grief and loss, life transitions, anxiety, relationship challenges, existential crises, and religion and/or spirituality. In addition to my work as a therapist, I’ve been training students to become counselors for seven years as a counselor educator and serving my local community as a minister for the past 19 years.
My counseling style is empathic, supportive, egalitarian, and Socratic. I perceive my role as a sojourner who works with you in discovering deeper truths and connections about yourself from a holistic approach which explores the mind, body, and spirit and its connectedness. Thus, we work to capture all aspects of your being including the many cultural identities that have shaped your worldview and identity. I work to build a safe, non-judgmental environment to which you feel heard, understood, accepted, and autonomous in making your own decisions from the new insights you acquire.
Secondly, the work we do together unearths beliefs, narratives, patterns of thinking, meanings, and ways of responding that are counterproductive to where you want to go or how you want to be in the world. Therefore, my counseling, too, includes cognitive-behavioral, rational-emotive-behavioral, existential, and solution focused approaches to assist you in gaining or re-gaining congruence within yourself, life meaning, or the healthy life you want.
The power you need is already within you!
