About Me
An ideal client is one who is being just who they are in spite of all the challenges or concerns they may be dealing with.
I have weekend and some evening hours.
I work as a counselor and as an instructor for SUDC students at CVTC. I have a masters degree in counseling from the University of Iowa and am credentialed with a LPC and CSAC in Wisconsin. I work with persons who have issues related to emotional well-being, whether mental health, adjustment related, substance-use related, or couple's issues.
I have worked in a private practice setting for 12 years. I have experience with emergency work at a ER (primary suicidal assessments). I have worked in substance use disorder agencies (hospitals and clinics, inpatient and outpatient, small non-profit and a few which are profit-based). I have extensive work with employee assistance counseling. I have also worked with clients with correctional issues.
Getting to understand what one is going through is a priority. Developing a working alliance with that person is essential. Patient empowerment and collaborative problem solving are cued in on.

Reviews
These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Troy Bruns. We don’t pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.
He always listens to me and has great insights and gives me techniques and tips to use in my daily life that are incredibly helpful!
Troy is very friendly and understanding. He sends me a clickable resources that I can work on outside of therapy. He is flexible with his scheduling and I appreciate the insights he has given me. I look forward to continuing to work with him in the future.
Troy has truly been a life saver. I felt heard and seen and didn’t feel any judgement. I feel like I was scared that my mental health concerns wouldn’t be taken seriously but I felt the exact opposite from him.
Troy is patient and kind, checks in on me when I don't message for extended periods. He's been supportive of my nonbinary identity and regularly shares resources with me that he thinks will help me or give new insights. I'm glad this seems to be a good fit for me.
I appreciate his willingness to simply text most of the time as I dont have time for phone or video conferences during the week
I really have loved working with Troy, he is very responsive to my needs and has been honestly lifesaving. I highly recommend him to anyone who is LGBTQ+ or who is dealing with general depression/anxiety. He is knowledgeable about LGBTQ+ struggles and helps me better communicate my needs surrounding my identity. Also love that BetterHelp is so accessible, I have done more traditional therapy methods in the past but found it difficult to maintain because of my schedule and how my anxiety around scheduling appointments. However, BetterHelp it makes it much easier and I can have a therapy appointment in my own room where I am already comfortable.
Troy was a large help to me as I navigated through a hard time with some difficult relationships in my life. He gave me a space to express my feelings, actively listened to them, and then provided insight that helped me see a positive perspective. After speaking with Troy, I saw myself in a much better light, which has been a mental struggle of mine. Thank you, Troy!
So far I am very happy with the service. It fits my busy life and doesnt require me to get a babysitter for a single session at the same cost.
