About Me

Hello, my name is Wanda Collazo. As we prepare to begin the therapeutic process and continue to develop a working relationship, I believe it is very helpful for you to learn some information regarding my professional background and counseling philosophy. I consider counseling as an interactive process during which we collaborate, exchange ideas, and design a plan of action with the intent of identifying your concerns and build the skills necessary to express your thoughts and feelings, overcome challenges, and gain a new life perspective. I look forward to our work together as we embark in this empowering experience.

I completed my graduate education receiving a Masters of Arts in Professional Counseling from Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA in September 7, 2011. I received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Liberty University, Lynchburg, VA in August 21, 2009. I currently hold licensure as a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) in the State of North Carolina. I have been licensed since March 2, 2012 and have been involved in the mental health field since January 2011. I have over ten years of experience providing counseling services to children, adults, and families.

I have over 20 years of military service and have extensive experience working with issues associated with military service to include family dynamics, deployments, frequent moves, etc. I have worked with a variety of clients to include parents and their children, couples, persons suffering from anxiety, depression, and Bipolar Disorder, adults and children dealing with bereavement and grief issues, adults coping with physical illness, job loss, and life stage adjustment, as well as chidden, adolescents, and adults suffering from Oppositional Defiant Disorder and Conduct Disorder.

I utilize many of the techniques associated with the Cognitive-Behavioral approach, which focuses on identifying the client's pattern of thoughts, recognizes potential areas of change of improvement, and modifies behavior. I have also been trained in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and chronically depressed and self-injurious clients. DBT focuses on building effective coping skills by addressing four main areas: Mindfulness, Emotional Regulation, Distress Tolerance, and Interpersonal Relationships. However, I employ an integrative approach to counseling that could be considered holistic in nature. I understand that as individuals, we operate within the context of our family structure, cultural background, social environment, religious beliefs, and many other factors that influence our lives on a daily basis. I will take into consideration all the unique aspects that make you who you are, as we address your areas of concern, devise a plan to resolve those issues and learn to adopt effective coping skills as we continue to move forward.

Very grateful to get to work with Wanda Collazo. She is incredibly easy to talk to, very insightful and makes me feel heard and understood. Her ability to identify the issues and suggest healthy solutions has been incredibly encouraging and comforting. She is the perfect match for my situation and such an asset to this program. I cannot recommend her highly enough.
