About me

My name is Zulma Rios, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) with over 8 years of post-graduate experience in the Mental Health field. I have worked in outpatient and in-home programs with children, adolescents, and adults with varied therapeutic support needs. Most recently, I have worked with foster and pre-adoptive families helping them navigate the various needs and stressors that arise in the process of fostering. Some of the areas of need covered have been providing psychoeducation on trauma, attachment, and child development, as well as adding skills related to parenting children with trauma, navigating grief and loss, and how to be better advocates for self and access supportive resources. In addition, I have helped individuals implement skills to aid in managing life stressors, such as periods of anxiety and depression.

I am a strong believer in developing awareness of one’s lifestyle and environment, and its impact on mental health; this is the first step in understanding your needs and how you can begin to help yourself in your journey of healing. My therapeutic approach is a medley of treatment modalities grounded in a person-centered perspective; teachings from solution focused theory, family systems, humanistic approach, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy are among some of the modalities included in my approach.

Some additional information about me that might help you in choosing whether I am a good fit for you are: I am bicultural (Puerto Rican American) and bilingual (Spanish); I moved to the U.S.A. as a freshly minted teenager and have lived here since (over two decades); I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Connecticut and a Master of Arts in Community Counseling from the University of Saint Joseph; I have been licensed (LPC) in the state of Connecticut since early 2016.
