Frequently asked questions about teen therapy

What can teen therapy help with?

Teen therapy can address a wide range of mental health concerns including anxiety, depression, trauma, family conflicts, and other mental health conditions.

How does online teen therapy work?

Teens complete a questionnaire and parental consent is obtained. They are matched with licensed therapists and can choose from video, phone, chat, or messaging sessions.

Do parents attend sessions?

Parents are kept informed but therapy sessions are discreet to encourage teens to express themselves freely. Family therapy sessions may include other family members as needed.

What types of therapy are used?

Therapists use evidence-based methods such as dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), family therapy, and other approaches tailored to teen needs.

How long does teen therapy usually last?

The length of therapy varies depending on individual needs, but many teens benefit from short-term therapy lasting several weeks to a few months, while others may require longer support.

Can teens switch therapists if they don’t feel comfortable?

Yes, Teen Counseling allows teens to switch therapists to ensure they find the right fit and feel comfortable during their therapy sessions.

What age range is appropriate for teen therapy?

Teen therapy is generally designed for individuals aged 13 to 19, providing age-appropriate mental health care and support tailored to young adults. Please note that individuals must be at least 18 years old to use BetterHelp.

Can therapy help with school-related stress?

Absolutely. Therapy can provide teens with coping strategies to manage academic pressure, improve time management, and reduce stress related to school and extracurricular activities.

What is Teen Counseling?

Teen Counseling is an online therapy platform, powered by BetterHelp where teens from ages 13-19 can get help from a licensed therapist online. We change the way teens approach their mental health and help them tackle life's challenges by providing accessible and affordable care.

Is Teen Counseling a substitute for traditional face to face therapy?

Therapists on Teen Counseling are licensed and certified by their state's board to provide therapy. However, while Teen Counseling may provide many of the same benefits as face-to-face therapy, it isn't a substitute for face-to-face therapy in every case. Most notably, your therapist isn't able to make official diagnoses, prescribe medication, or fulfill any court order.

How do I communicate with the therapist?

When you're matched to a therapist, you and your teen can communicate with the therapist in four ways:

  • Exchanging messages with your therapist

  • Live chat (real-time therapy via messaging)

  • Phone session

  • Video session

For live sessions, we encourage you and your teen to try what works best for you, based on your needs, availability, and convenience.

What are live sessions and how do they work?

Live sessions are scheduled therapy sessions between your teen and the therapist, ranging typically from 30 to 45 minutes. Parents aren't able to join sessions between the teen and therapist, however they can choose to meet with the therapist separately. You can choose between video, phone, and live chat sessions.

  • Video session - have a face-to-face chat with your therapist.

  • Phone session - conveniently speak with your therapist on the phone.

  • Live chat - get therapy through real-time text chat with your therapist.

To attend a live session, you must first select a timeslot and schedule a live session with your therapist. After selecting a time and session type, log in to your account at the scheduled time. If joining a video session, you can select "Join Video Room" and wait in the video room until your therapist joins. For phone and live chat sessions, log in at the scheduled time and your therapist will provide further instructions.
