Trevor Gillen, BACP
About me
I am a BACP registered MA Counsellor with experience in a variety of issues including anxiety and depression. My approach to counselling is underpinned by valuing and nurturing the therapeutic alliance; that means getting to know you and place what you need at the centre of our work. Working from a position of integrative counselling enables me to use problem solving, CBT, active listening and empathy to their full potential and in the capacity my clients find the most beneficial. I have a firm belief in co-production of counselling, particularly for anxiety, depression and trauma, where clients often feel disempowered by their experience. Rather than offer advice and solve problems for the people I am with, my clients often comment on my approach being centred on empowerment and helping them reach their potential.
My approach places my appreciation of your individuality at the centre of our work. I believe in, and deliver, therapy that stems from both evidence-based practice and practice-based evidence. We will tailor your therapy to you and your individual needs. I am committed to equality and diversity- everything that makes you, you, are key ingredients to our therapy. I was born and had my formative education in Leicester, United Kingdom which gave me an appreciation of a multitude of different cultures. This has helped me to from an approach to counselling that places an appreciation of individuals unique differences as a central element to their individual therapy. Valuing individuality and the idea of clients feeling able to openly offer their unique meaning of their experiences empowers me to offer choices to clients about their therapy and co-create goals personal to their therapy.
It can be hard to find the right words to describe how we feel. I have experience in a variety of settings, including the NHS, England and Furth Education colleges with a range of clients who experience anxiety, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, social anxiety, depression, stress, panic attacks, family issues or issues around self esteem to name but a few. What you feel matters and, together, I hope we are able to explore what that means for you, even if we don't have the right words for it yet.
Within my one-to-one counselling sessions, I offer a space for you and your needs, without judgment. I see people on a weekly basis and through listening and exploring, I get to know what it is like in your world. We can explore and make sense of what is going on for you and, together, find the right direction for you to get the most out of our time. What you need matters. Our sessions will be paced in a way you feel comfortable and not exposed or overwhelmed. Sometimes, talking is helpful. Other times, it may be that you would like to engage in goal orientated tasks, mindfulness or creative activities. It is important to me that I help facilitate our time together in a way most useful to you. What you take from therapy after each session matters. By working together, I hope for your outcomes to be sustainable and empowering.

Trevor is a great therapist. He listens intently and offers alternative thoughts, ideas, views which can be really eye opening. I've had sessions with Trevor for 9 months and he has an amazing manner and approach. He is personalble, friendly, honest and caring. Couldn't ask for more.

Trevor has been a fantastic therapist for me at a very difficult time. I initially started seeing him due to work-related stress, but a few weeks into our therapy I had a stroke, and that brought up a whole new set of things to work through and deal with. His advice and support has been absolutely invaluable in navigating through a minefield at work, as well as issues in my personal and family life. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend him to anyone, he is absolutely top rate.

Having never done therapy before, I initially found it difficult to trust in the process, but Trevor made me feel listened to and that enabled me to open up and talk clearly about the things I was working through. Trevor comes across as smart, insightful, kind and is, I think, very good at his job! He is also extremely punctual and will never let you down!
