Sometimes you want to express how you feel to close friends but can't come up with the words. Finding the right quote that conveys your message can make your friend feel validated and special. Knowing that you are paying it forward to another person can also give you a sense of contentment. Here are some of the best quotes about friendship.
Old Friend Quotes
"The best mirror is an old friend."
Meaning: An old friend will give you a better picture of yourself than a looking glass. Old friends will be truthful, honest, and tell it like it is.
"It takes a long time to grow an old friend."
Meaning: A new friendship is similar to planting a seed and watching it grow. In the beginning, a new friendship/new sprout takes a lot of time and nurturing for it to survive. Once a friendship/baby plant gets bigger and stronger, it doesn't need as much attention to thrive. Once the plant/friendship is mature and has gone through its growth period, it can survive through many adversities.
"The most valuable antiques are old friends."
Meaning: An antique is something that is old and has either a nostalgic or monetary value.
Best Friend Quotes
"A best friend is like a four-leaf clover; hard to find, lucky to have."
Meaning: Four leaf-clovers are next to impossible to find. To find one, you have to do a lot of searching. Once you find one a precious, rare clovers, it is considered very lucky. Switch out a best friend for clover, and the quote makes a lot of sense.
"A good friend knows all your best stories. A best friend lived them all with you."
Meaning: You’re likely to tell a good friend stories about your trips, laugh fests, embarrassments, shopping sprees, etc. You won't have to tell your best friend those stories because they are often with you when you experience them.
"A best friend sees the first tear, catches the second, and stops the third."
Meaning: Sometimes, you may feel like crying, but you hold those tears in because you don't want others to see you in a vulnerable position. Your best friend can often see past those tears and will be there to support you in whatever you are going through. They will also say the things that make you feel better to help the tears stop falling.
Book And Movie Quotes
"Why did you do this for me?” he asked. “I don't deserve it! I've never done anything for you.”
“You have been my friend,” replied Charlotte. “That in itself is a tremendous thing."
—E.B. White, “Charlotte's Web”
Meaning: Being a good friend, day in and day out, means more to someone than a few big demonstrative acts.
"One friend with whom you have a lot in common is better than three with whom you struggle to find things to talk about." ― Mindy Kaling, “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?”
Meaning: This is the definition of quality vs. quantity. It is better to have one great friend than many acquaintances you can't hold a conversation with.
"'You have some queer friends, Dorothy,' she said. 'The queerness doesn't matter, so long as they're friends,' was the answer" ― L. Frank Baum, “The Road to Oz”
Meaning: Queer, in this instance, means odd. When you have a good friend, you may overlook or not even notice their oddities or quirks because you are looking at them as your friend first.
"I found out what the secret to life is—friends. Best friends." ― Fannie Flagg, "Fried Green Tomatoes"
Meaning: Life is often better and more fun when you have friends to share it with. Nothing is better than sharing your experiences with a best friend. They raise the level of joy and contentment.
"Dear George: Remember no man is a failure who has friends." ― "It's a Wonderful Life"
Meaning: If you have seen "It's a Wonderful Life," you know that George Bailey feels that his life is a failure due to a series of mishaps. This quote assures him that his life is not a failure because he had so many friends who stood up for him, supported him, and wanted what was best for him. If you have encircled yourself with people like that, you are a definite success.
"True friends are always together in spirit." ― Lucy Maud Montgomery, "Anne of Green Gables"
Meaning: Some friends you see every day. Some friends you see a couple of times a month. Some friends you don't see very often at all. In your heart, however, you know that they are there for you, are thinking about you and love you even though you aren't physically together.
Quotes For Getting Through Tough Times
"Good friends make the good times better and the hard times easier."
Meaning: Sharing fun experiences with friends makes those times even better. When things are tough, having a good friend to lean on can often make those hard times just a bit easier to get through. With a friend you may feel like you are not alone and can get through anything.
"Hard times will always reveal true friends."
Meaning: Some friends love to share only fun experiences because there is little stress or effort needed. When things get tough, some of those friends may jump ship because they don't want the stress. True friends will be there to weather the storm, to support, and to show love.
"It's the friends who you can call at 4 a.m. that matter." ― Marlene Dietrich
Meaning: Nothing good happens after midnight (unless it is the birth of a baby). If you are calling someone at 4 a.m., it's not usually about something good. If you can call a friend at 4 a.m. without hesitation and that they won't be mad or aggravated, that is a true friend.
Funny Friendship Quotes
"Friends come and go like the waves on the ocean…but the true ones stay like an octopus on your face."
Meaning: Just like waves, surface friends or acquaintances will come and go. If you have true, invested friends, they are likely to stick with you just like an octopus will adhere to other animals or objects. It's funny to think of your true friends attached to your face and wrapped around your head like an octopus.
"Friends are people who know you well and like you anyway."
Meaning: Everyone has quirks and issues; no one is perfect. You usually let your true friends see every side of you because you are comfortable with them, and they, in turn, show you their baggage. If you can share those things with a friend and they don't run away in horror, you know you have a true friend.
"Lots of people want to ride with you in the limo, but what you want is someone who will take the bus with you when the limo breaks down." ― Oprah Winfrey
Meaning: If you are riding in a limo, you are probably going to a special event, or maybe you're independently wealthy. If you have to take a bus, your car may be in the shop, or you may not own a car at all. So, the limo represents the good times, and the bus represents the bad times. You want someone who will be there for bad times so that they can celebrate the good times too.
"We'll be best friends forever because you know too much."
Meaning: It’s common to share your secrets, thoughts, dreams, and concerns with your closest friends. You may tell them things that you have never told anyone else. This quote is said tongue-in-cheek, with the hope that even if a friendship dissolves, one or both individuals won't go around airing the other's dirty laundry.
"True friendship is when you walk into their house, and your Wi-Fi connects automatically."
Meaning: You don't give your Wi-Fi password to just anyone, and you wouldn't need the Wi-Fi password if you didn't spend a lot of time at that place. You may spend a lot of time at your friend's house because it is a place of joy and comfort.
