The impact of teamwork

As knowledge expands, responsibilities grow, and life inevitably changes, taking on challenges alone often proves to be ineffective, if not impossible. Both at work and at home, various problems are presented to us on a daily basis. From payroll issues to what to make for dinner, a wide range of issues can often be solved more effectively through team work.

"The world is so complex, no one person has the skills or knowledge to accomplish all that we want to accomplish," says Susan McDaniel, PhD. Collaborating with team members pays off by letting individuals bring different viewpoints to problem-solving, making it easier and more effective to find solutions.

When team members understand and collaborate on the division of tasks and responsibilities, this not only improves group outcomes but enhances each individual's overall effectiveness, communication, and relationships. As such, the impact of teamwork is far-reaching, affecting both group and individual team member efforts.

What makes a team work?

Though humans have historically teamed up to accomplish common goals, an article published by the American Psychological Association explains that psychologists are now “zeroing in on the methods and processes that make those collaborations more efficient and successful.”

According to DePaul University associate professor Suzanne Bell, PhD, and her co-authors, a team’s success often hinges on the attitudes, behaviors and cognitive states of the individuals involved. Researchers refer to this as the ABCs of teamwork.

Along with composition, the effectiveness of teamwork is influenced by the group's overall objective. For example, if a team’s goal is to design a new device, it’s helpful to build a team of diverse thinkers who bring a range of knowledge to the project. However, if a team's goal is achieving consensus on dinner plans, diverse attitudes might be less critical.

Additionally, Yale researchers found that teams with a sense of "psychological safety" tend to be more engaged, creative, and innovative. When team members work together in a relaxed environment that encourages feedback from everyone, this fosters openness about challenges, ideas and solutions.

The key to team building

At its core, effective team building hinges on open and effective communication. Whether at home or at work, communication serves as the key to a solid foundation for collaborative efforts. By maintaining open lines of communication with team leaders, co-workers, family, and friends, you can foster trust, create a positive atmosphere, and work together more effectively.

Effective communication also emphasizes the importance of complementary skills like listening and remaining open-minded. By proactively listening to those around you, you may be better equipped to address needs and challenges before they arise and therefore respond effectively. This enables every individual to be a better coworker, leader, or member of the family.

Tips for team building at work and at home

Though every team is unique, there are a number of strategies that can be applied at home and in the workplace to enhance team building.

How therapy can help build teams

In many cases, therapy can help individuals acquire the communication tools and strategies needed to implement key team-building principles. A therapist may provide personalized guidance on your situation, helping you to better identify your’s and your team members' unique challenges and needs. Additionally, the practice of open communication with an in-person or online therapist can enhance your ability to communicate with others.

Online therapy can be helpful for building many useful skills, including improving communication for a work or personal environment. Studies indicate that online therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy

Takeaway

While teamwork is essential in educational, group, and work environments, its benefits extend into personal and familial spheres.
