About me

My interest in psychology dates back to my high school years (1980’s anyone?), leading me to become a Doctor of Clinical Psychology in 1992 and a Licensed Psychologist in the state of Maryland in 1993. While the field of mental health has experienced a mix of challenges and exciting advances over the past 25 years, establishing a collaborative relationship and building upon an individual’s strengths have always been mainstays of my approach to working with clients. Specific to theoretical orientation, I draw upon cognitive behavioral techniques, mindfulness, and Positive Psychology approaches.

Areas of clinical interest for me include the influence of physical health upon mental well-being and counseling approaches that leverage the understanding of neurology and brain function in choosing therapeutic techniques. I have specialty training in anxiety and stress management, depression, and coping with the impact of attention deficit disorders (ADHD). Additionally, I have significant experience working with individuals with blindness or a visual impairment and parents of children with special needs.

Thanks for your time and please reach out if you believe working with me would be a good fit.

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Dr. Allison Bethea. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

I'm generally a positive, optimistic person who can solve problems. But sometimes I want to admit that life isn't perfect or even that conditions are unbearable. Friends can't handle that level of honesty, and would naturally want to talk me out of those feelings, but not Dr. Bethea. It's nice to be able to admit things to someone who listens and understands. And she does wait until she understands before offering advice. Her advice isn't heavy-handed at all. It's very gentle, and I've had good results when I've taken it.

Responsive and professional. I couldn't navigate my situation without her help

Dr. Bethea truly sees her clients as individuals, not cases. She adapts her methods to each person’s needs, blending different therapeutic approaches with care and skill. Her ability to meet you where you are makes the work both personal and effective.

I have always been scared of therapy. However, Dr. Bethea helped make therapy welcoming and engaging. She listened without judgement and was really knowledgeable. It was like I was having a conversation and it really helped me become more transparent and feel comfortable discussing my personal life

I’m not an easy egg to crack, so I appreciate Dr. Bethea listening in an easy manner but then taking insight from some of my possibly innocuous statements and bringing it all full circle again
