Hi, I'm Amy Strobel, Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I've worked with clients in an outpatient setting for the past 31 years. Over those many years, I have developed a style of therapy that focuses on grief. I believe the root of most of our distress comes from loss and trauma and then the grief that follows.
Sometimes that is long standing grief from early childhood trauma and sometimes it is from recent and current stressors showing up in our lives. We experience grief when we don't get the job we want, when our relationships are full of disappoints and conflicts, when our bodies don't respond to life in the way we had expected, when we are rejected for simply being who we are, when we struggle with addictions, when we lose someone from death or the end of a relationship as in breakup, divorce or children leaving the home. The most profound and effective way to heal from grief is to have it witnessed in a safe and supportive environment. I find that people need validation way more than they need advice. After your story has been witnessed, there is room to use some therapeutic tools to minimize the distress and develop daily skills to manage ongoing distress. I'm an EMDR and EFT therapist and see significant recovery with clients when we follow that process. Tell your story with empathy and support and then work on shifting the mind and body to more align with how you would like to live your life. Let me know if this sounds like a path for you.
