I was a career Paramedic/Firefighter before going to graduate school. This is part of why working with first responders is one of my passions and my primary area of expertise. I completed my Masters in Counseling at Old Dominion University in 2009. I am licensed by the Virginia Board of Counseling as a Licensed Professional Counselor. My primary areas of counseling are in traumatic stress, professional burnout, and compassion fatigue. I also provide counseling in couples counseling, family issues, occupational issues, life stressors, general depression, general anxiety, etc. I understand that the world is not made of perfect scenarios and not everything in treatment is going to work idealistically the first time. I see my role as a counselor as being that I help you learn the knowledge and skills to help yourself. I adapt my counseling style to my client's needs, so I will use a mix of REBT, CBT, Person-Centered, Gestalt, and Adlerian, among various other theories and methods, as needed to meet each specific individual's needs. I use these theoretical approaches together with integrative medical health, meaning that we will explore others areas of life that effect mental health, such as exercise, nutrition, sleep, etc., and may include recommendations for consult and follow up with professionals in these areas. I do not typically limit my counseling practice to any specific age or population, nor do I typically limit what issues I will help a client with in counseling, but I do use a lot of cognitive approaches that requires a level of maturity where the client is willing and able to think critically, self-reflect, and understand the interactions between thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and actions. Many of my clients are people that previously had difficulty finding comfort with other counselors, so I have over the years learned to appreciate and enjoy working with people who have started losing faith in the benefits of counseling. While being at a distance does change some details on how things are done, the my counseling approach via distance counseling platforms (such as BetterHelp) is the same as the counseling I provide in-person; my clients here get the same level of dedicated service that my in-person clients receive.

Brian Strode has helped me figure out myself through CBT. I think he is an extremely helpful person, who is a subject matter expert in his field. If I could give him 11 out of 10 stars, I would. He is incredibly personable and he listens, but also engages in the conversation and makes me see things in a different perspective. Thank you Brian for everything you have done so far!!!

I have been working with Brian for a few sessions and already i feel more confident in therapy. I have had some negative experiences in the past but brian has given me a more positive outlook. His style of therapy is productive in creating goals moving forward as well as educating you. I feel heard when i have a concern and therapy feels more like a conversation than an interrogation. 10 out of 10 will recommend.

I’ve only been meeting with Brian for a few weeks, but the primary skill I was looking for in a counselor was someone who can explain my challenges to me on a neurological and scientific level, in combination with providing skills to manage those challenges. Brian has already done both of those things. Looking forward to continuing to work with him!

Brian was able to use easily relatable examples during our conversations to help me better understand what he was trying to explain. He was also able to quickly and effectively identify what I had been struggling with for a while and then help me work thru it all. I would highly suggest Brian to anyone!

Brian has been an exceptional counselor and has exceeded my expectations by his ability to listen and provide optimal feedback. His knowledge is vast and is able to effectively articulate his knowledge to ensure your understanding. He has been a breath of fresh air for someone who tends to be on the picky side towards counselors and does not want to waste time or money.

I’ve been in and out of counseling for years, and I have always struggled to connect with my counselors. From our very first video chat, I immediately felt the respect, concern, and relatability I needed to open up. I’m actually in the counseling/human services field myself, and Brian is the first counselor I’ve had to really acknowledge that, and talk to me like an equal.
