About me

Hello! I'm glad that you are here. The following is a little about me and my counseling philosophy. I am a Master's Level Licensed Professional Counselor with Mental Health Service Provider designation. Please note that I see only clients who reside and are physically in the state of Tennessee. I completed my Master's in Counseling from Eastern Illinois University in 2003 and have worked as a therapist since. I have been in private practice in West Tennessee since 2009. I can't imagine doing anything else!

My approach to counseling is to meet you where you are in your life's journey and to help you be your authentic self. I do not consider it my job to "change" you, rather it is to help you identify, process and unpack areas in your life that you feel you need to process or improve upon. I utilize an eclectic approach to counseling, as it is definitely not a "one size fits all" experience. Some of my favorite approaches include mindfulness based counseling, cognitive behavioral therapy and Rogerian...providing support through unconditional positive regard in order to bring about positive change.

Common issues I help clients with are: anxiety, OCD/intrusive thoughts, depression, issues regarding identity, sexuality, relationships, family, parenting, self-esteem and self worth, narcissistic abuse recovery, and "why am I here and what is all this for?!" a.k.a. existential crisis.

I stay in frequent contact with my clients between sessions via journal entries, worksheets and messages. I love sharing video links to helpful resources. I recommend books and podcasts and send affirmations and mantras.

I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Please feel free to reach out any time!

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Cathy Tanner. We don’t pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

Cathy is absolutely wonderful. She is kind, insightful, intelligent, and exactly how you'd hope a therapist would be. This is my first time using therapy, and in just one session, Cathy was able to provide me with a completely new perspective on a strained relationship in my life, along with some tools to help nurture it back to health. We still have some more work to do, but I'm so impressed by the impact therapy has had on my life already after just one week. I highly recommend her!

Cathy is awesome. She is super welcoming and friendly which was super important to me because it was my first time going to therapy. She sends you messages in between sessions as well as homework to reflect on your progress and session as a whole. I would recommend Cathy and her style to anyone struggling with anxiety, heartbreak, and more.

She is truly the best. I’m glad to have met her and made a friend in someone I can trust and who I know genuinely cares about me and me as a whole.

Cathy is amazing. I recently went through the death of my partner, and she was so thoughtful and so understanding. She helped me cope in ways I never thought imaginable. She has been so patient with me crawling in a cave in sadness, but been so consistent in her encouragement and checkups with me. I appreciate her sincere efforts to help me.
