I am Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Oregon with over four years of professional work experience. I have experience in helping clients with stress and anxiety, coping with addictions, trauma and abuse, mood disorders, PTSD, psychotic disorders, and developmental disorders. I believe in treating everyone with respect, sensitivity, and compassion. I will tailor our dialog and treatment plan to meet your unique and specific needs. It takes courage to seek out a more fulfilling and happier life and to take the first steps towards a change. I am here to support & empower you in that journey.
My approach is two-fold with the first goal being to create a relationship that is respectful, empathetic, and professional. It is impossible for someone to open up to someone without building a relationship based on trust, honesty, and open communication. The next goal is to examine to need for change and what that may actually look like for you. Often individuals and couples want to create change in their lives but are not willing to give up those things that are preventing change, and overcoming that resistance and barriers to prevent the desired change from occurring.
I always utilize a Person-Centered approach with all my client’s regardless of personal background, as everyone’s experience is unique to themselves, and utilize listening to understand rather than listening to reply, understanding with empathy and unconditional positive regard, while also staying true to whom I am as a counselor and professional in helping the client. I also will always evaluate motivation for change, barriers to change, and work with clients to overcome those barriers, even if the barrier is the client themselves. This is called Motivational Interviewing, and is important to ensure that the client is willing to embrace change, create a plan for change, take action steps, and maintain the gains.
The second phase requires exploration, and creating changes in thinking and behaviors that promotes healthier and more positive ways of interacting in the world to reach individual client goals and improve functioning. This is achieved through Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapies that increase awareness and mindfulness of the here and now, and how to problem-solve and make positive decisions and provides for best possible outcomes for yourselves and loved ones. When client have limited resources and lack time to go deeply into their problems, I utilize a brief solution focused style that utilizes mindfulness and staying focused on here and now issues rather than a deep drive into a client’s background. I also utilize, what is called existential therapy for individuals whom lack purpose or meaning in their own lives.
I believe that the client is the expert in their own lives, and I am there to help them return toward the path they wish to be on in life, and learn to experience the journey of life with the skills to avoid and cope with the tragedies and triumph we face on that journey. I look forward to getting to working with you and help you reach the goals that will get you back on your journey with confidence and resilience.

Dale has been exactly what I was looking for in my therapy experience. He was a good listener about the things going in my life and has the life experience to relate me in order to give me what I needed. I only talked with him for 5 sessions but really got a lot out of our conversations, and can take tools and mindsets I learned from him with me into my future.

When I first started using betterhelp.com, I was asked several questions to aid in choosing my therapist. I couldn't have made a better choice with Dale Troutman. He guided me in a thoughtful, concerned and compassionate way. His approach to my self-care allowed me to make the difficult decisions and tough realizations myself. His attentive relevant feedback guided me towards making the important choices I needed to make on what’s the next right thing to do. And then he watched me achieve many of my goals. I appreciate this approach versus him simply telling me what I needed to do or must do. He helped me discover the vital importance of taking care of myself first before anything else can be addressed. I’m very happy with the direction I’m going now. Especially in the area of taking better care of myself both mentally and physically. Dale also showed me various methods and mindsets I can use to stay consciously aware of when communicating with those people that are the most important in my life. He showed me various approaches I can use to better express myself. And even more important, how to listen to others, really listen, and understand to the best of my ability, the true meaning of the message or feelings of those in my close relationships are trying to convey rather than me simply listening to formulate my own reply. My sessions with Dale helped me immensely in getting to the better place I needed to be, and I feel his therapy approach allows me to maintain the best possible positive outlook going forward. A BIG Thank You to Dale!

I’ve been talking with Dale for about 5 months now, and he has been wonderful. I have really enjoyed our weekly conversations and I have made so much progress that I almost feel like a new person. He has been a welcome advisor when life was difficult and enthusiastic cheerleader when life was going well. I will take the encouragement and support he has given me and carry it for a lifetime.

I spent over 5 months with Dale. It was the first time I'd ever done therapy and he let me find my own way in and met me wherever I needed to go. His mix of real world perspective and clinical application was exactly what I needed. I looked forward to each session and Dale was able to give me new insights that I hadn't considered (or didn't want to consider) and I was able to navigate some past trauma for the first time in a long time. I'm grateful.

Dale is very good listener and provides thoughtful insight on what I had concerns with. He helped me understand my situation the negative side, but also helped me see the positive side. We jumped right into the issue during our first discussion which was hard, having an uncomfortable conversation always will be regardless whenever it happens. But at the end of our discussion it wasn't uncomfortable. I knew that Dale heard me, and understood my problem. I definitely felt that through our discussions we would work though it, and fallow up on it. Thank you Dale!
