I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Arkansas and have been since 2009. Between then and now, I have worked as a therapist in a diversity of clinical settings including outpatient clinics, day treatment programs, colleges, and inpatient psychiatric hospitals. I completed a Bachelors in Psychology and a Masters in Counseling from The University of Central Arkansas, concluding in 2008. For at least that long now I have had a deep and abiding interested in human psychology and what can be done about it.
My therapeutic approach would be best classified as Cognitive, but also Existential. The first goal is understanding, followed by action. My approach endeavors to help the client become more aware of how they think about and process experience. From this augmented awareness, work can then be done to modify thought processes and belief systems to better align with, and more effectively operate in, the client's world.
There are other therapists who work from first principles of Support or Behavior Modification or Unconditional Positive Regard or a General Eclecticism, amongst others. These are equally valid overall (and can be more or less valid depending on the particular situation). Interestingly, most research has found that therapeutic approach (as well as therapist education and experience) does not correlate well with therapeutic outcome. The critical factor, it appears, is client-therapist fit. Essentially, does the therapist and their approach dovetail with the client's personality and experience and challenges. The client, of course, is the best (and perhaps only) judge of that. So, if my work and style sound like they could be that for you, I am here.
