Deborah Hill, LMFT
About me
I am a Marriage and Family therapist with over 30 years experience. I have worked in a variety of settings: community mental health settings, inpatient alcohol and drug treatment counselor, as well as an outpatient counselor for recovering people and family members, Sexual Assault Crisis Center working with adults recently assaulted, or assaulted as children. I have maintained a private practice for much of my career, helping people navigate divorce, death, job loss, changes to employment, depression, anxiety, stress, anger, parenting, relationships, and health changes. For the last 10 years I have worked exclusively with our military and their families on military installations in the United States, as well as installations outside the United States.
I believe the single best predictor of a helpful experience in therapy/counseling is the relationship between counselor and client. I want to have an early conversation with clients about goals. What is it the client wants to gain or achieve from our time together. I encourage clients to use community resources when available and appropriate. Hurting people frequently do better with a network of support. The goal is for clients to develop a way to successfully navigate the pain that brought them to our time together.
My style is interactive. My approach to providing counseling is eclectic: humanistic, psychodynamic as well as rational emotive. What a session looks like/feels like is driven by client needs. A recent widows' needs are different from those of a 30 year old struggling with sobriety.
It takes courage to ask for help. I am cognizant that I stand on sacred ground when another person shares their pain, fear and struggles.
