Hello. My name is Ellen DeFilipps and I have been a licensed therapist for 15 years. I have a Masters degree in marriage and family therapy, and a Bachelors degree in film studies. During the course of my career as a therapist, I have been fortunate enough to work with a variety of people, some with greater challenges than others, but all of whom were equally important in terms of providing appropriate treatment so as to be able to meet their treatment goals. Although I use an eclectic treatment approach, I always begin with a client-centered approach, in which the client takes an active role in their treatment. On the part of the therapist, it requires being non-judgmental, utilizing “active” listening, providing unconditional positive regard, and empathizing with the client. I believe that this initial approach is the foundation for a successful therapeutic relationship. Building on that approach, I draw from any number of therapeutic approaches, depending on the client’s needs (e.g., coping skills for anxiety and/or depression, “walking“ with someone as they go through the experience of grief and loss, or helping individuals understand the dynamics within their family and providing tools for them to be able to cope with and/or improve interactions among family members. My fundamental belief about counseling is that each and every person is unique and that a “one size fits all” therapy style does not take into account or respect an individual’s strengths and worldview. Therapy needs to be an interactive relationship between a client and a therapist, in which the client is a partner in the therapeutic relationship rather than a helpless patient.

I recently started working with Ellen and find that she seems to know more than my therapist that I’ve been going to for the last 15 years! She’s very knowledgeable and understanding. Most of all, she listens. Strongly recommend her!
Ellen is wonderful. I felt comfortable since the first session, and our relationship has been developing alongside our weekly progress. She has repeatedly offered additional support between sessions via text and she has been my anchor in this journey.
Ellen has been helpful to talk to and understands my needs. She offers guidance and exercises to do on my own time to help with my challenges.
Ellen is so compassionate and I love the the way her sessions work. She is approachable, listens very well, and always asks the right questions.
