About me

I became a mental health counselor so I could help people. It may sound simple, but my true passion is helping someone in need. Growing up, I was the friend that people turned to for advice or when they were in crisis. Eventually, I realized that the reason people kept coming to me was that I somehow must be helping!

I obtained my Masters degree from the University of Massachuetts (Boston) in 2008. I have since become a licensed mental health counselor (LMHC).

Professionally, here are some of the most common issues I have worked on with people- (please note this is not a full list):

Depression
Anxiety
Bipolar Disorder
Relationship Issues
Grief & Loss
Problems with Self Esteem
Past Trauma / PTSD
Alcoholism
Low self-esteem
Domestic Violence
Anger Management
Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Issues (LGBT friendly)
...again, this is not the full list so it may be possible that I have experience with your particular issue so please feel free to ask. :)

I believe feeling comfortable with your counselor is perhaps the most important piece of the puzzle. The foundation of counseling is an open, trusting relationship that builds over time. In order for this to happen, the client/counselor pairing has to feel safe, rewarding and should be the "right fit" for you. Even online, we will get a sense of one another's personalities and whether we are a good match!

My main counseling philosophy is called person-centered therapy. Basically, a person-centered therapist:

1. Allows a client to express his/her feelings without fear of being judged.
2. Demonstrates "unconditional positive regard," which is complete acceptance and support for the client.
3. Reflects back to the client the feelings and thoughts that have been shared. The goal of this is to allow the client to gain a clearer understanding of their own inner thoughts, perceptions and emotions.
4. Is genuine and honest in giving the client feedback, but is not necessarily giving advice. In other words, the therapist is working with the client to help him/her make life decisions and can help a client explore and weigh options.
5. Works with a client to help find his/her true positive potential!

I always remind people that I do not have a "magic wand" -- seeking counseling will not magically solve your problems. My promise to you is that I will use my experience, education and empathy in the best way I know how, making a true effort to help you. We will work together and the effort we both put forth will be reflected in your results.

I hope this has given you a better idea of who I am as a person and a counselor. Let's chat to get to know one another better and I will do my very best to help you!

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Emily Rein. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

Emily Rein is great. She's kind and responsive and supportive. Talking to her gets a huge weight off my chest especially since I feel like I can't speak to anyone else.
