I am a professional therapist with membership in the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy since 2005. I obtained my CTI Accredited Diploma in Counselling Skills twelve years ago, then spent five years after that working with The Samaritans, HOPELine UK, MIND and the Alzheimer’s Society to provide face-to-face and telephone counselling. I have conducted a private practice for the last nine years.
With my background in individual therapy, I am able to build relationships quickly and provide a safe and comfortable environment for clients to address issues and concerns as well as find constructive ways to heal and grow in strength of mind.
My role is to find healthy and effective ways to integrate important changes to how clients cope with the emotional impact of their experiences in the past. I help develop vital skills to move forward, to help a client confidently discover and explore ways to be healthier and stronger in the face of whatever challenges present during the therapeutic process. Confidentiality, non-judgment, unconditional positive regard, a high degree of empathy, privacy and honesty are the hallmarks of my practice.
I use Rogerian Person-Centred therapy and Existential Psychotherapy techniques. My calm, humanistic approach is vital to my work and also reflects my values and my principles. I have worked primarily with bereaved clients, but also clients who have survived personal trauma and health issues, asylum seekers and refugees, former prostitutes, carers of dementia patients and ex-offenders.
While continually developing myself professionally by writing journals, reading articles, attending conferences and seminars and liaising with colleagues within the field of counselling and psychotherapy I have successfully managed to conduct my individual practice and I have supported a diverse client base.

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for James Theard. We don’t pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.
The thought of James in my life is itself a blessing. The fact that I speak with him makes me very lucky. I am grateful to God/Allah that he is in my life and supports me. Anyone that knows him is lucky. Thank you James for always being there for me.
Incredible. Helpful beyond words. Thank you from the bottom of my heart
He's just so understanding and patient. Softly spoken so easy to talk to, but firm in his beliefs and passionate about you as a person.
James is a fantastic therapist! He helped me to identify issues with my self confidence, and guided me through building a sense of self-esteem and personal power. Thank you James.
Helpful, professional, understanding, and constantly zeroed in on the right issues and asking the right questions. While all that's subjective, I'm very happy with the progress I'm making thanks to meetings with James.
James is supportive, flexible and multimodal (email/journal/live chat). Very helpful at reframing and being informative and validating.
James is an astute listener who quickly gets to the nub of the issue. His suggestions and advice are sound and he doesn’t shy away from pointing out an alternative perspective in a gentle way.
James has been very helpful to me. He's been patient and understanding, and thanks to him, I've had more confidence in facing my issues.
what an absolute top lad
reassuring and friendly
James is a godsend- and I don't use that word lightly.
He listens and helps me put things together I never knew were connected. I feel like i have a better picture of my life now than I did before seeing him and that is only like...two sessions worth. He is soft-spoken, and calm and brings things up gently. Cannot recommend him highly enough.
