About me

I am a psychologist recently licensed in Virginia with over 5 years of experience and training in providing individual therapy to address an array of presenting concerns. Most of my clinical work has involved treating mood disorders, substance use disorders, and PTSD. I believe I am particularly skilled at helping people improve their ability to regulate emotions and to communicate more effectively.

My therapeutic style is genuine, collaborative, and honest. Therapy often involves difficult conversations and I do not shy away from those. I also believe that effective therapy must account for factors from a person’s cultural background that may be related to current concerns. Early on, we will work together to generate a treatment plan and discuss what approaches and interventions may be most beneficial for you.

American psychologist Diana Fosha stated, “The very making of an appointment with a total stranger to deal with the greatest intimacies and vulnerabilities of one’s life is an act of profound faith."

I look forward to hearing from you!

Dr. Trefethen is a great listener. She consistently asks thoughtful questions and provides practical suggestions tailored to me and the person, situation, or circumstance. Within a couple of sessions, I felt very comfortable opening up to her and she was able to help me navigate some very complex polyamorous dynamics.
