About me

Hello! My name is Jeff Dixon, and I am therapist with 8 years of experience in providing therapy, and 13 years total in the mental health field. In my career I have worked directly with people in residential services, case management, group facilitation, crisis work, and therapy. I am also a licensed pastoral counselor with 24 years in the ministry. I have enjoyed working with people from wonderfully diverse backgrounds - race, nationality, religion, gender, age, and sexual orientation - providing therapy for individuals struggling with issues such as depression, grief, anxiety, stress, panic, trauma, guilt, shame, life changes, and finding meaning and purpose.
I received my undergrad education at St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, N.C., and my Master of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago, IL. I received my Master of Social Work from Arizona State University.

I use several therapies to assist individuals. The type of therapy used depends on the type of problem they are trying to address. Client-centered Therapy guides our time together by laying a foundation of empathy and positive regard. Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) teaches how to examine one's thoughts to ascertain if they are accurate or if there are issues that are triggered by unhelpful/unhealthy ways of thinking. Mindfulness Training is used in conjunction with the CBT to assist individuals in identifying and being aware of the troubling thoughts. Plus, it is a wonderful relaxation technique. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is used to overcome trauma and adverse experiences. I also provide Guided Imagery as a powerful tool to manage mood disorders such as depression and anxiety.

I am an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church (USA), and can provide pastoral counseling for those who request it. I use an approach called Spiritual Resources This technique was developed while I was working as a chaplain at University Medical Center in Tucson, AZ. It is a way of helping a person identify what their understanding is of ultimate purpose and meaning for their life. It was created for use with people from all religious backgrounds, organized or traditional, or for those seeking their own path. I have worked with people who find meaning and purpose in Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism, Alcoholics Anonymous, literature, philosophy, visual art, Star Trek and Star Wars. Dream interpretation may also be explored. The goal is for each individual to reconnect with their understanding of purpose and meaning. In each case, an individual's dignity and identity is always respected without judgment.

Whatever issue you are trying to address, we work together as a team as you continue on your journey.
I look forward to working with you!

Jeff Dixon

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Jeffrey (Jeff) Dixon. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

I’m very lucky to have found a counselor with enough knowledge of religion and enough open mindedness to allow me to process and self reflect in a depth psychology frame. It’s been torture trying to find a counselor these days who will allow me to work through issues this way without agitating the issue more for me. I actually feel a connection to another human soul and that connection has the value I’ve been looking for.

I think Jeff is a very professional person and very genuine in wanting to help others. I went from a counseling heathen due to bad past experiences, to a happy and understanding individual towards it. He listens thoroughly and offers his own personal experiences to connect with his clients on a deeper level. Thanks Jeff! Your help is much appreciated!

Jeff is a fantastic therapist and is definitely one of the most knowledgeable I’ve ever worked with. He definitely knows his stuff and really tries to genuinely work with you to get the help you need. Would absolutely recommend him to anyone seeking a therapist that is genuinely helpful and more than just a person to talk at.
