About me

I am licensed in Maryland with 11 years of professional work experience. I have clinical experience in providing counseling to culturally diverse adolescent and adult populations in both individual and group settings. While I consider myself a generalist, I have provided counseling services that address the following presenting concerns:
• Depression; anxiety; substance use; relational issues; anger management; stress management; spiritual life adjustment issues; motivation, self-esteem, and confidence concerns.

My primary theoretical approach to counseling is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This approach is based on the belief that people’s emotions and behaviors are heavily influenced by their perceptions of events. These unhelpful ways of thinking can negatively affect our emotions and behaviors. By using CBT, I hope to collaboratively identify strategies to modify your thinking, mood and behavior in a healthier and more useful way that leads to improvement in your life as you define it. Additionally, there are occasions where the issue is primarily external to you, in which case problem-solving strategies and skill building may be the preferred method. My approach is collaborative in that it relies upon you as the expert of your life and world. I also work holistically, which involves honoring and understanding your personal values system, which may include cultural factors (race, ethnicity, spirituality, affectional and gender identity, ability, socioeconomic background, and others). As the expert of your own life, I believe that you have strengths and resources which can assist you in achieving your goals. Consequently, this process requires active participation by you. Much of the work and progress is due to what is done outside of our counseling sessions. As such, you may be asked to complete outside activities to apply new skills and access your strengths, with the purpose of reaching your personal goals. I look forward to supporting and empowering you in that journey.
