About me

Welcome! My name is Kristy Mathews and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in New Jersey. With about four years of clinical experience and over 10 years of experience providing services to individuals and families that are impacted by mental health. I have developed the skills and knowledge that are most beneficial for those that seek to experience ongoing personal growth, fulfilling relationships, academic and career achievement, and wellness of the body and mind.

In addition to the educational requirements of a Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling degree that I hold, I have also received training in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Assessing and Managing Suicide Risk, and Expressive Therapies. Additionally, in my practice I regularly draw from Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. Essentially, science-based theories are an integral component of my counseling practice. In conjunction with scientific theory, I regularly incorporate holistic and alternative therapeutic approaches, such as meditation, yoga, expressive arts, and both exercise and nutrition. It is always my intention to provide a client-centered treatment approach that will build on your personal and/or spiritual beliefs, cultural norms, and worldview.

At an early age, I was inspired to pursue a career in mental health counseling due to both an inner desire to understand human behavior and because I had been positively impacted by a few supportive and compassionate individuals that helped me survive, and even thrive, through and after challenging life experiences. As time passes, I am continually reminded of how incredibly valuable we are to one another, as fellow humans traveling along the path of life. Pain is inevitable, but suffering is certainly not. I believe that we all have the capacity to provide healing to one another, and to ourselves, but sometimes we need the support of a professional who has the education and training to utilize that healing capacity in an effective manner.

Therapy is both a science and an art, rooted in decades of research and practical application, with the unconditionally supportive, accepting, and compassionate therapeutic relationship being at the center of the process. You have the freedom to share your story with me at any pace that is most comfortable for you. I look forward to building trust and comfort, hearing your story, and learning about the ways in which you process your thoughts and feelings. Together, we will embark upon a journey of growth, acceptance, and emotional stabilization.

Kristy is perhaps the most professional & helpful therapist I’ve had the pleasure to work with over my 12+ years of therapy. She always knows the right questions to ask to get me to think deeply about my pressing issues, or to get me to consider my life / circumstances in a new way. She’s always offering helpful exercises & articles that further enrich the work we are doing & to further my own education in psychological topics. I consider myself extremely lucky to have been matched with her. Give this woman a raise!! She is above & beyond worthy.
