About me

I completed my Master of Social Work degree in April of 1998 while working full-time . I had begun volunteering at a domestic violence shelter and was looking at methods for helping these at -risk families. My first job post Master's degree was working in the foster care system. That led me to a better understanding of child welfare, family dynamics, and the legal system. I then moved back to my hometown in northeast Michigan to work as an infant mental health specialist. This opportunity gave me more skill in working with trauma, family therapy, and being comfortable in the client's own home. My work at the local hospital's behavioral health services expanded my ability to provide individual psychotherapy to people of all ages and background. I also developed proficiancy in working with in-patient units for substance abuse and mental illness. during my employment there. My move to the VA was a wonderful journey and extremely educational. At this point in my life I feel that my knowledge, background, and skills has made me a well rounded therapist. I am comfortable utilizing different modalities with a variety of clients.

I've only had one session with Laurie so far, but she made it really easy to open up to her. She has the most inviting and soothing voice. It felt like I had known her for years, talking to her.

Laurie is the best. From the very beginning, she has created a safe space for me to slowly open up and be vulnerable. When I talk to her, I feel safe, heard, and seen. Laurie is a support I never had, and I am deeply grateful to have her as my therapist.
