I am a psychologist who is licensed in both the states of Alabama and Georgia and I have had the opportunity to work in the field of psychology for several years. I have worked in the both university settings (as a teacher and counselor) as well as in private practice. I have also had the opportunity to travel and share my knowledge through lectures and workshops. I have the most experience in helping people who struggle with unipolar (but not bipolar) depression and anxiety. I also have a considerable amount of experience in working with individuals who have problems with managing stress and managing their emotions. I have a special interest in helping people understand the relationship between how they care for their bodies (through diet, exercise, sleep, etc) and their psychological functioning. I just love to see the changes that people experience when I teach them not only psychological strategies, but also how to better care for their minds by implementing healthy lifestyle principles. This is a passion that I have for those who are dealing with emotional and mental challenges.
My counseling style is warm, but also straightforward and honest. I consider myself to be a kind and compassionate person. and I truly desire to help those who are hurting. In my work with people, I do not focus on merely "talk therapy." I believe that each person must take active steps in the therapy process and that the key to healing is to look at what a person can do in their present situation to address their challenges. In my work with clients, I focus on helping them understand how their thoughts impact their emotions and their behavior - principles from the field of cognitive behavior therapy. I also teach people how their lifestyle habits - diet, rest, exercise, etc. - affects their mental health. In addition, I sometimes utilize concepts and strategies from the area of positive psychology, which helps people identify and enhance their strengths (as opposed to merely focusing on people's weaknesses "abnormalities," so to speak).
Are you hurting? Do you need a helping hand? I would love to be that "hand" and help you make those changes. Working with me will take commitment and will require you to not be just a "passive participant," so to speak, in your healing and recovery. If you are willing to do your part, I am here for you and would love to work with you. All it takes is that first step and you can make that step today!
- Stress, Anxiety

Dr. Porterfield has been very engaging. She took the time to learn about my situation from beginning to end. She listened and asked questions and then she started giving me things to do to make me feel better. I am grateful for her help and I am still chatting with her often.
She is a wonderfully warm and patient woman. She's very respectful and doesn't belittle me when I'm having one of my episodes.
She is very professional and caring and gets straight to the point. I really appreciate the insight she has given me.
Dr. Porterfield is amazing. She is very responsive and available to listen as per your convenience. She offers great advice and is willing to help you through your problems.
Dr. Porterfield is very warm and professional. Each of her messages are well-organized and have clear objectives. Her counseling style is goal-oriented and she encourages you to learn and grow through resources that are free, online, with concrete messages. Physical health and self-care are part of her methods, and she will advise you to make lifestyle changes if you do not already make your physical health and nutrition a priority.
Dr. Porterfield is kind and professional. She offers several resources to help oneself. She provides relevant information for whatever issues one is going through.
I love Dr. Porterfield and she is doing a good job. She is responding well and I would recommend her to another person. Keep up with the good work.
I used to see a psychiatrist and I did not like that experience and was very adamant that I would never do it again, Betterhelp has given me the confidence and courage to do that. Dr. Porterfield is really nice to talk to and just her being there and knowing she'll reply as soon as she can, gave me comfort. I was able to do the basic things I struggled to. It's lovely to share your journey with someone that knows what they're doing.
Dr. Porterfield is a very genuine and caring counselor. She will tell you like it is when you need it the most. She taught me so many things and helped me to grow as a person and I truly will never be able to repay her for what she has done for me as a person with my emotional growth and for helping to save my relationship. Since she is also a nutritionist, she can give recommendations if she feels they would help for foods or supplements that could help you to feel better as well. As a male, I never thought I would like having a female counselor not because of anything sexist but I didn't know if I would be able to open up to them in the same way but she put all that to ease during our first chats. She is an excellent choice for a counselor and you will not go wrong with Dr. Porterfield. She is the best of the best on BetterHelp.
Very happy with her ideas and thoughts.
Ms. Porterfield is an amazing person, and she helped me so much with my anxiety and panic attack issues. I feel like I have a close friend of mine that I can talk too! She's there for me and she always listens to my thoughts and concerns with empathy and deep interest. She even checks on me on random times to see if I am ok! She is an amazing professional and I would highly recommend her to anyone!
Very caring and helpful. Easy to talk to and share feelings with. Very supportive and positive. She helped me in dealing with my sadness and showed me ways to handle it and to always look at the bright side and be hopeful and grateful.
I thought she was lovely and gentle. She went out of her way to monitor and contain my anxiety and sort of looked out for me. Although I was a bit surprised by the use of positive psychology I can see how it might be difficult to offer more depth work with someone like me presenting with so much anxiety and depressed mood. Her suggestions and recommendations for my wellbeing were however always thoughtful and attuned and served to give me some hope and light from all this worry and isolation. So I felt taken care of and she made me feel better.
