About me

I am an Accredited and Registered Person-Centred and CBT Therapist (BACP Accredited), as well as a Certified Schema Therapist (ISST) with extensive experience in working with complex trauma, PTSD, attachment issues, and autism. I also support clients dealing with anxiety, anger, and depression.
My training includes:
• Mentalization-Based Therapy for Families (MBT-F)
• CBT and Trauma-Focused CBT for PTSD (Anna Freud Centre)
• ADOS-2 Assessment Training (Autism)
• Motivational Interviewing (Tavistock & Portman)
I work collaboratively with clients to facilitate change, process grief, overcome trauma, build resilience, and reduce unhelpful thinking patterns. I also provide parental support and guidance.
My approach is client-led, motivational, and strength-based, tailored to help individuals achieve their personal goals. I draw on skills from CBT and DBT to support emotional regulation and cognitive change. For those navigating difficult life events, I offer a non-directive counselling approach that supports healing through acceptance, insight, and self-compassion.
I understand that beginning therapy can feel daunting. However, having a safe, accepting, and non-judgmental space to explore your experiences can be a powerful turning point. Talking about what’s troubling you can help normalise your experience, offer clarity, and support meaningful and lasting change.

I hold a first class degree in BA Hons in Person-Centred counselling and psychotherapy, (Middlesex University) and went onto receive an A in both my certificate and Diploma in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (accredited through the University of the West of Scotland UWS). I have completed training in Motivational Interviewing at the Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust.
Due to my background in working with trauma I completed training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy skills (DBT) and training in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (TF-CBT) throught the Anna Frued Center.
Most recently I completed the training in Mentalization Based Therapy for families (MBT-F)(Anna Frued centre) and I am a certified Schema Therapist (ISST).
It can be a very difficult decision for some clients to seek support but often this can be life changing and I look forward to supporting on this journey.

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Neill Hughes. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

Neill Hughes has been a very good therapist. He is insightful and direct. He listens to all of my concerns, problems, past experiences and present situations I have found myself in and the impact that everything has had on me. My reactions and behaviours and the effects it has all had on my mental health and how I’m dealing with things. How I cope with and communicate my feelings. He can understand and help me to identify what I need to do and what to prioritise and focus on. I recognise that I’m calmer, not as reactive and I can regulate my emotions a lot more now than before. So I’d recommend him.
