About me

Thanks for visiting my page!

My name is Rene Brathwaite and I am a Licensed Counselor of Mental Health for the State of Delaware. I have been working in the Mental Health field for 8 plus years and a counselor for last three. I have experience in several settings: residential, inpatient, community based. and mobile therapy. I have now ventured into outpatient practice with kids, adolescents, teenagers, and adults.

My counseling styles range but are primarily person/client-centered and solution-focused with an emphasis on Cognitive and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (CBT & DBT); I believe the client is the expert on their experience. My current and future interests for expertise are in Career Counseling and becoming a Certified Eating Disorders Professional.
I am easy to get along with, very attentive and supportive, and always rooting for you but not afraid of therapeutic confrontation. One of the phrases that has stood out to me during my education is "unconditional positive regard"; I will fully accept who you are and where you are.

I am a Board Certified Co-Occurring Disorders Professional working with adults living with persistent mental illness and substance use disorders. This is not limited to just mental illness, co-occurring encompasses developmental disability, medical illness, and environmental issues coupled with substance use. I employ Motivational Interviewing, DBT, Stages of Change Theory, and knowledge of the 12 Steps for Addiction with this population.

My philosophy is that our relationship comes first, if we establish the appropriate therapeutic bond, we can work through anything together; this process is worth taking the time to build. Thanks for considering working with me!

Rene became someone I was able to lean on and express myself with no filters, I enjoyed my conversations with him a lot

Rene is amazing and has helped me through so much. He’s empathetic, kind, and listens attentively and without judgement. I’ve come a long way because of him, and would highly recommend him.

Rene has helped me figure out so much about myself. I was hesitant about starting therapy at first, but after a few sessions with Rene I found myself becoming more and more excited about sessions. Rene is honest and always gives constructive feedback. The way he rephrases and clarifies my thoughts helps me figure out the messy and often difficult parts of my life.

I was in a really dark place during the winter months of COVID, I had doubts about my friendships, self-worth, and had lost the coping mechanisms that I was used to for years. At first I felt foolish for sharing some of my thoughts, thinking, "I sound so ridiculous after hearing myself out loud." Rene was so easy to talk to, he listened, and gave me advice that was non-judgmental, realistic, and effective. One thing I also loved about working with him, was that he shared his own life experiences with me, something that I wasn't used to in a counseling setting, but that made me feel less embarrassed and understood. It was like talking to a friend I'd known for years, we laughed a lot, and after only a couple sessions, I felt very comfortable sharing my life and challenges with him. I now have tools and new coping mechanisms to help me along the way, and I'm so very grateful. If I ever need additional counseling, Rene is my dude. Thank you for everything!
