About Me

I am Bob Zima, a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor who resides in Illinois. I provide collaborative counseling services to individuals, couple, and families whose lives have been ripped apart due to loss and the inability to heal that loss in effective and healthy ways.

Healing is difficult. If it were easy then everyone would do it.

When we don’t heal, don’t put in the hard work, our unresolved pain and fear fuels anger, anxiety, addiction, and other behaviors that destroy relationships and make life taste like a cardboard dirt sandwich with a side of sawdust.

I collaborate with individuals and couples looking to improve the quality of their life by understanding how their story (past/present/future), personality, and temperament influence their psychological fitness skills (coping, problem solving, and communicating) and overall mental wellness.

Using Narrative, Cognitive Behavioral, and Client-Center Therapy techniques and psychoeducation, I help individuals and couples identify and accept their personality traits, temperament characteristics, life story, wants and needs. Then, we craft new, future-focused narratives and begin the healing process by establishing effective boundaries, taking healthy risks, and building lasting connections that meet the client’s needs. I use humor, videos, podcasts, blog posts and other tools to help people learn the skills they need to improve the quality of their life and find true mental wellness.

Since 2006, I have worked as a Director of Behavioral Health in community mental health, offered assessments and treatment consultations in emergency rooms when patients presented with psychiatric emergencies, taught future counselors at two universities, worked in private practice, key-noted at national conferences, and continue to produce media to help people gain and maintain mental fitness. Prior to entering the field of counseling, I spent 20 plus years in broadcast media, advertising, and marketing. After a series of unfortunate life-events, I returned to graduate school to secure a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology in 2003.

If you are ready to start the exhilarating yet daunting task of healing, coming to know and accept who you are and what you want from life, then make the all-important decision to connect and start your adventure now.

Bob is humorous, relatable, and very good at what he does. I came in to my sessions with a few issues I was hoping to 'solve', and Bob helped me to understand that this might not always be possible. We have to change how we think. I would recommend Bob to anyone looking for any level of therapy.

Bob has been an incredible counselor. I've survived through catastrophic loss and trauma with his help. I feel safe telling him exactly what I'm feeling and he always says the right things, asks the right questions and just throws me a rope to hang onto when I'm in those dark pits. But more importantly, he's a kind and caring person.

Written by M.E. on Jun 12, 2021 after therapy with Bob for 9 months on issues concerning depression, family conflicts, trauma and abuse, and anger management

Bob has been the counselor I been looking for years. I feel supported, heard, and like I am actually going somewhere after sharing my troubles. Like I have someone to actually help me, and not just to sympathize or lend me their ears. Bob actively listens and responds. It feels nice to receive reminders and Bob saying he looks forward to our upcoming sessions, treating it not like sessions and more like a personable experience. He also reaches out and checks in every now and then outside our meeting sessions. I am so grateful to have him help me. I feel grounded and not lost in my thoughts and emotions with his help. In fact he helps me work through them most of the times as well! My mental health has definitely improved and I feel better about myself. For that I feel grateful to Bob. I look forward to our sessions and look forward to continue working with Bob

Bob is amazing! He does not judge. He listens to your story and then is able to help you find how you were feeling or do feel in the different episodes of your story. He then finds the appropriate strategy for you to practice in order to interpret the situation for it what it actually is. I'm early in this process with Bob, but these strategies are helping me tremendously. I feel like so much weight is lifted from me after each video session we have. I also know that if I'm struggling in any moment, I can message him with confidence he will respond in a timely manner. I would highly recommend Bob to a friend.
