About me

Greetings! I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Illinois, have a Master's Degree in Clinical Social Work, and have more than 20 years of experience working in the mental health field, and more than 17 years of experience working directly as a mental health therapist in community mental health agencies and in private practice. My development as a therapist was first formed by my research into, and awareness of dysfunctional and addictive family systems and by working as a Parent-Education Instructor in a juvenile justice diversion program, where I facilitated groups with juvenile offenders and with their parents. Then, after graduation, I worked as an intensive home-based family therapist providing at least five hours of psychotherapy services directly in the homes of families whose teenagers were at risk of out of home placement. These two experiences were privileges that taught me the reality of how a strengths-based, solution-focused approach, that both honored a family's values and resiliency, while it also encouraged the development of communication skills that allowed for the sharing of deeply-held feelings and which promoted increasingly respectful communication, could truly make positive changes more than possible.

You will find that my approach is deeply empathetic and non-judgmental, while it is also informed by various models of psychotherapy that will help us, as a team, to make incremental changes that will likely help you experience some immediate relief of symptoms while we also delve into the root causes of your current struggles in life. It is my experience that all of us struggle at times, and have experiences where we can get stuck not knowing how to find our way forward, given the tools we have been using. I believe you will find that our partnership is the foundation on which we can help you experience progress and success as you find ways to utilize various tools that you likely already have in your toolbox, but have not yet considered using in approaching your current difficulties. You will find that I encourage you to think about your situation and that I will also direct you to various resources to both help you learn and to help you deal with any symptoms you are experiencing.

I want you to know that I have historically worked with a wide range of clients at every age and stage of life, and that as a therapist I have extensive training in working with those struggling with mental illnesses, including those with severe forms of depression and anxiety, and those having experienced trauma and abuse, and with those having parenting issues. I also have significant experience working with those struggling with relationship issues, family conflict, emotional intimacy issues, and grief and loss. In my work with couples, I seek to help each partner express their vulnerabilities in the relationship, and help each one find their own unique voice with which to share, and listen to the other. The most important thing for you to know, though, is that no matter the issue, it is your willingness to explore your current struggles, while we mutually ponder the situation and I invite you to find solutions that will work for you, that will help us to help you experience the growth, change, hope, and healing you desire. I look forward to working with you!

Roberta Hinman is an absolutely wonderful counselor and super easy to talk to. She’s very attentive to my mannerisms on video calls and is quick to help me relax when I’m getting anxious. I don’t think I could ask for any better.

Roberta is a fantastic source of insight and clarity. I have only had two sessions but she instantly made me feel as if she just “got it” - almost as if she could see into my brain in a way which is slightly spooky! She is very kind and caring - honestly I can tell her anything. 10/10

Roberta Hinman is the BEST therapist I have ever worked with. She is so easy to open up and talk too. She offers many different options and thoughts to understand how to help and communicate in a way that is comforting for you. When signing up for Betterhelp I was nervous and didn't think that therapy was going to work for me but having Roberta as my therapist has changed my thoughts on therapy completely!
