Dr. Stacy Johnston, Psychologist
About me
I am licensed in California with 32 years of professional work experience. I have experience in helping clients with stress and anxiety, relationship issues, family conflicts, & motivation, self esteem, and confidence. I believe that you are the expert of your story and that you have many strengths that will assist you in overcoming things that challenge you. Taking the first step to seeking a more fulfilling and happier life takes courage. I am here to support you in that process.
NOTE-I do provide asynchronous text messaging only and prefer it for the following reasons: very flexible with no scheduling necessary, can refer back to our conversation at any time day or night and get a response anywhere from within a few hours to no later than 12 hours typically, with multiple exchanges in one day/evening when not busy, allows both parties to be on their own time schedule at their convenience, and for some it is easier to express thoughts and feelings in writing versus verbally or when on camera. I have worked this way for over a year and have had success with many clients who work well with this format. It is not for everyone, but for some, it does work really well and provides more contact than a weekly live session does. I hope to work with you soon!

Dr. Johnston is so kind and helpful. She always responds with understanding and tries to provide me a different perspective on whatever I bring her. My therapy journey has been tough, finding the right sounding board isn’t easy, and oftentimes mine would leave the practice and nobody at their office would communicate that with me. BetterHelp doesn’t seem to have that issue. Dr. Johnston has been my longest standing therapist and has helped me through a number of issues, big and small. Things I’ve wanted to work through for a long time, but also day to day interactions I feel like I’m not grasping well. Her messaging only style also makes it easy to send her a note in the moment I am struggling, which helps me be able to move through that moment and continue my day until her response can help me more. I don’t have to sit with my feelings until my next appointment (which by then honestly I would have forgotten the last 72 hours anyways or forgotten important details about how a situation occurred). Dr. Johnston has helped me rekindle a connection to myself that I really needed.

I message with Dr Johnston and it’s been a new way of therapy for me. I’ve done live/one on one therapy before but something about texting (although not as personal) really allows me to be honest and write everything down. This is actually therapeutic for me. I also like that it serves kind of like a diary where I can read back what I wrote and reflect on it. She has been very supportive, offering encouragement and reassurance. That’s what I’ve needed these past 6 months. I also find this type of therapy less exhausting. I still get very emotional in writing but I like that it’s consistent and I can respond throughout the week instead of having one very long exhausting session. I’m unfiltered, raw and motivated to be honest with all my challenges and felings. Dr. Johnston has been very supportive through it all.

I will forever be eternally grateful for my therapist. She navigated through a very difficult time of my life and continues to do so and I feel she really listens and offers words of encouragement as well as questions that make me realize on my own things that I never saw before or chose to ignore and I am happy to be living more content now

Dr. Johnston has helped me process some things and get over a mental hurdle I had set up for myself.

I just started my therapy with Dr. Johnston a few weeks ago and given my husband's illness have not been able to regularly communicate with her. However, just having her there and checking in on me has been such a help. In responding to her questions I am able to share my emotional state. It helps knowing there is someone I can share my inner state with. Thanks, Dr. Johnston.
