About me

My name is Dr. Sylvia Akingbade, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and a Provisionally Licensed Psychologist in the state of Texas. I hold a Doctorate in Psychology (PsyD) and have over ten years of experience in the mental health field, working with children, adolescents, adults, and individuals with disabilities. My background includes supporting clients through concerns such as trauma, anxiety, depression, life transitions, and complex family dynamics.

Over the years, I’ve come to understand that seeking support is not always easy—but it can be life-changing. Working with individuals from diverse backgrounds has reinforced that this work is more than a profession for me; it is truly my calling.

My approach to therapy integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Person-Centered Therapy. Together, we will explore patterns in your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors while creating a space where you feel safe, heard, and understood. I tailor each session to meet your unique needs, always approaching you with empathy and without judgment.

My goal is to provide a supportive and collaborative environment where you feel empowered to make meaningful changes. You set the pace, and I am here to guide and support you every step of the way.

Taking the first step toward therapy requires courage, and choosing to invest in yourself is something to be proud of. I look forward to supporting you on your journey.

I enjoy speaking with her. She is a great listener and asks the right questions to help guide you to the issue's root.

I’ve only had two sessions so far. But I feel like she really understands what my concerns are. She listens and she engages and lets me just ramble about how I’m feeling. She’s been absolutely amazing.

I am extremely happy with the therapy sessions I have with Sylvia. She is incredibly understanding and helpful. She offers support and great worksheets and exercises I can practice on my own. I definitely see a difference in my thought patterns since starting therapy and I can say that I have also gained more confidence in myself. I am extremely thankful for her support!

Sylvia is a wonderful and very gentle person. She has helped me so much during my time at BetterHelp. When I started my therapy with her I felt like I was spiralling uncontrollably and Sylvia was there to catch me. Anyone that gets Sylvia as their therapist is really lucky.
Thank you for everything, Sylvia!

Throughout my sessions, Sylvia patiently listened to me process my thoughts and feelings while guiding me towards the core of my problems. She gave me the tools to address my problems and helped me develop the right mindset to change my habits. I’m still in progress myself but I believe Sylvia has helped me build a foundation to make changes with intention.

I really got a lot out of the sessions with Sylvia and I'm so grateful for her help. I'd never tried counselling before and I didn't know what to expect, or if it would help but I'm so glad I did.

Sylvia is an excellent listener, very calming and reassuring. She's easy to speak to / open up to and I felt that she really understood me. She gave me the space to process what I was thinking and encouraged me to make the connections/find the answers myself. The worksheets she sent over between sessions were very thoughtfully chosen and meant that we could make good use of the time on our calls, as she'd already read the worksheet and thought about it in advance of the session. The worksheets she chose also helped me to continue processing what we'd spoken about afterwards, and I think because of this we were able to get to the root of what my problems were and start to deal with them fairly quickly.

So in short, totally recommend... and I'm really glad I made this investment in myself! Thank you! :)
