About me

I am a clinical and forensic psychologist licensed in California with over 10 years of experience working with a diverse group of patients in both the community mental health and private practice setting. I've worked extensively with clients who have depression/anxiety, but have also worked extensively with the severely mentally ill, addiction, trauma/abuse and sexual issues. Of course, at the heart of all of these are the relationships that form the framework of our everyday lives, so it goes without saying that addressing those concerns are always part and parcel of the therapy goals!

My counseling style could be described as humanistic. I truly believe that, deep down, you know what's best for you. I'm merely here to help guide when the path gets murky. I also believe that treatment should focus on your goals, and that choosing the right strategy (that is comfortable for you, while still yielding clear results) is paramount. I was trained psycho-dynamic and cognitive-behaviorally; however, I'm always open to tailoring a treatment plan to your specific desires/needs. Ideally, I'd like to foster a therapy relationship in which you feel completely at ease to be yourself, while we challenge you to push toward meeting your goals.

I commend you for taking the leap of faith that's needed in a format like this, and - if you think we're a good match - I'd love to help you grow.

Reviews

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Dr. Teal Kozel. We don't pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.

Dr. Kozel has been a phenomenal resource. Writing to her is its own therapeutic exercise, and I always look forward to hearing back---her responses are invariably thoughtful and kind; she takes time to consider messages and, upon responding, offers valuable insight that helps me organize my own thoughts and feelings about whatever it is that's challenging me in a given week. I'm very happy to have discovered BetterHelp and to have been matched with Dr. Kozel.

Dr. Kozel has been very helpful in enabling me to crystalize my thoughts and theories about what has been troubling me. She is warm, friendly, and open — and she offers insights that probably never would have occurred to me, all in a very gentle manner that never feels authoritarian or even diagnostic. I am very happy to have made her acquaintance, if only virtually.

Dr. K is extremely relatable, helpful, and kind -- while still saying the things that are sometimes difficult to hear. I really admire and appreciate her style of counsel.

She's been fantastic, insightful and encouraging. We've engaged in some conversations that have really given me pause and a new way to look at how I'm viewing my problems/obstacles. I enjoy how we communicate to each other. She's clear and concise, and I was even able to take a compliment from her seriously! (Something I rarely do with anyone )
