About me

Dr. Tioana Maxwell began her undergraduate education at Hampton University in Virginia, where she earned her Bachelor's degree in Molecular and Cellular Biology. She then earned a Masters of Liberal Art in Psychology from the University of Saint Thomas in Houston, Texas and went on to receive her doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Alliant International University's California School of Professional Psychology, an APA accredited program. While studying for her doctorate, Dr. Maxwell interned in various settings such as an outpatient mental health center, medical center, and college campus. Dr. Maxwell was a contributing researcher at Providence Community Center, Santa Ana CA, on the ‘Evidenced Based Practices of The Pre and Post Effects of Therapy on Children Diagnosed with ADHD.' Dr. Maxwell's pre-doctoral training also included working with individuals diagnosed with Acquired Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She completed her doctoral dissertation on the ‘Investigation of Mild Traumatic Brain Injuries on the Iraqi and Afghanistan War Veterans. Dr. Maxwell received post-doctoral training at a long-term rehabilitation facility in Houston, Texas where she further developed her expertise in Acquired Brain Injuries and dual diagnosis. As Lead Clinical Psychologist with MHMRA, she worked with individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Intellectual Disabilities, ADHD, and Down's syndrome. Dr. Maxwell's clinical experience includes individual and group therapy with specialties in Marriage and Family, Addictions, Substance Abuse, Depression, Anxiety, and Trauma. Dr. Maxwell provides evidenced based treatments through the use of cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavior therapy techniques. Dr. Maxwell also enjoys practicing mindfulness techniques and incorporates mindfulness in the therapeutic process. Dr. Maxwell has a goal oriented therapy approach that involves working with her clients to help restore functioning and relieve emotional distress. This is achieved through teaching effective skills to manage life's difficulties. Dr. Maxwell takes a warm and compassionate approach to therapy while encouraging learning and change.
