Hello! My name is Valerie Horton. I am a licensed professional clinical counselor and licensed independent chemical dependency counselor licensed in the state of Ohio with 15 years of experience. I have worked in a variety of settings including community mental health, private practice, addiction treatment facilities as well as managed care. I have worked with clients with a wide variety of diagnosis such as major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, chemical dependency as well as life stressors, grief, infertility, and post partum depression. I also have personal experience with autism spectrum disorder and parenting.
My therapeutic style is person centered, solution focused. I find motivational interviewing to be an excellent strategy when clients feel stuck, and are looking for next steps. I believe in treating everyone with respect and kindness. I believe its most important to be kind to yourself throughout the therapeutic process and I encourage active reflection. I believe the most important technique in therapy is building a solid rapport with the client, to fully listen and hear what they are looking for, and act as a guide throughout the process. I will tailor our dialog and treatment plan to meet your unique and specific needs.
Finally, I want to congratulate you for reaching out and looking for help. I know it is not easy. By working together I believe we will be able to find the answers you are looking for. I look forward to meeting you and walking with you on your path.

Valerie Horton helped me when I was coming out and when I was really discovering who I was and what I was doing to people around me. She helped me to become a better person and realize mistakes and flaws are ok but it’s how we learn and grow. She helped me from the first session to the last. Valerie truly helped me believe in myself and think about what is best for myself.

Valerie is absolutely wonderful! She is caring, kind, considerate, compassionate, and supportive. I would not have made the progress that I have within the last few months without her advice and patience. She always responds promptly to messages and checks in throughout the week to see how things are going. I would highly recommend Valerie to everyone I know because of her level of professionalism and nurturing style that encourages you to make change without pushing you too far out of your comfort zone. She gives manageable "assignments" for the week that in the long run have helped me turn into the person that I want to become rather than stuck in a miserable place. I have noticed improvements with my confidence, happiness, and overall life satisfaction as a result of working with Valerie. She lets me speak and process my thoughts rather then telling me how I should feel which is very important for me in our client-practitioner relationship. Our video sessions are the highlight of my week and she is flexible to accommodate my busy schedule. 1,000,000/10 would definitely recommend Valerie!

Valerie is terrific. She is such a peaceful, mindful person that it is a joy to talk with her, even when the topic is troublesome. I trust her with my feelings and never feel demeaned or belittled in any way. It's very difficult for me to allow myself to be vulnerable in that way, but she makes it easy.
