Prof. Valerie Starr

(MA, LCMHC)

About Me

I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and have served clients for over twenty-five years. Over the years, I have worked with a broad range of client issues, from depression and anxiety to self-awareness and personal development. I have worked with many people recovering from trauma and loss, individuals seeking to improve their relationships, and mothers and fathers who wish to gain enhanced skill in parenting.

In addition to my work as a Mental Health Counselor, I have worked for over ten years as an Adjunct Professor in a local college. I teach graduate level courses to adults wishing to enter the field of Mental Health Counseling. The courses I teach are Family Systems Therapy and Ethics in the Counseling Profession.

My counseling style is warm and compassionate. I am deeply committed to a person-centered practice. I strongly believe in the resilience of the human spirit, in our ability to heal within the context of a caring and non-judgmental relationship, and in the potential for wellness and joy in each and every human being. I stay away from the use of labels, but prefer to meet each person as a unique individual who is striving for happiness and a better life. I honor your genuineness and your authenticity.

I have deep respect for people who seek the challenge and the satisfaction that come with personal growth. I will honor your choices and provide support and insight along the way. I look forward to working with you.

Professor Starr is excellent at what she does. She's very helpful as well as being attentive so you don't feel neglected. I haven't been talking with her long, buts she's offered some excellent solutions and coping mechanisms to aid me in my day to day life.

Written by J.E on Jan 11, 2017 after counseling with Valerie for 3 weeks depression, stress, anxiety, relationship, family, grief, parenting, and self esteem

I have seen other therapists in person in the past, and they weren't helpful. This time I came to the site in a moment when I felt I was close to falling in a deep depression. Prof. Starr she was nice, warm, she was there for me and always replied quickly (I have a tendency of writing very long messages, but she would always go through them and get back as soon as possible). Even on the days I would expect her to be taking some time off, resting or similar, I would get a reply from her.

She helped me through very hard times. She did not criticize my situation or me. I would definitely recommend her. I still have a lot to work on, but I'm more optimistic about the future and working to make it better. Excellent work. Excellent therapist. Excellent person. Thanks Prof. Starr.

I have had several in-person therapists in the past, but this has been the best experience yet. Having the time to write what I'm thinking lets me think things through. I get much more out of a few messages back and forth than I ever got in an hour of counseling.

Professor Starr helped me greatly with some relationship issues I was struggling with. She didn't tell me what to do, but gave me several good ways to look at a situation and evaluate things.

She was always very quick to respond to my messages and I was very impressed with her overall!

Written by L.Y on Mar 29, 2015 after counseling with Valerie for 2 weeks

As a counselor myself, I was pretty skeptical
of online counseling, but since I didn't have a counselor to see, I thought I would give this try.
I have been truly impressed withProfessor Starr. She is understanding, caring, and
knowledgeable. Her responses have been
so helpful to me. In addition to being a warm and caring "ear" in times of crisis, she also recommends practical coping skills that I can apply to my everyday life.

Written by V.E on Mar 28, 2015 after counseling with Valerie for 2 weeks stress, anxiety, relationship, self esteem, career, and depression

Professor Starr is one amazing person. Warm, energetic, intuitive, professional with a characteristic which has winners (directed, self-confident, reasonable in decision-making and what is particularly adorned is that she does not give up easily). On her magically way she creates the illusion that she's present in every moment to your life and always ready to offer you a piece that is missing or to pick up scattered pieces and merge them together.
She very quickly responds, and frequency of communication is directed to the needs of the client.
The client is not walking wallet. Her client is personality, to whom she is genuinely dedicated.
Thanks to her I could resolve my personal dilemmas, and I think that will drastically affect the quality of my life.
I'm sure that her work effects will last longer than a period in which she will be my therapist, which is the only indicator of the success of therapy. Great job. Thank you, Proff. Starr.
