About me

My name is Yemi, and I am a licensed professional counselor in the state of Oklahoma. I have over five years experience providing mental health services to marginalized or underserved individuals. I have worked in a variety of settings, including outpatient, inpatient, correction, juvenile and in-home. I have the most experience working with complex trauma, problematic sexual behavior in children and adolescents, depression, and severe mental illnesses. I also have experience providing assessments to toddlers exposed to prenatal substance.

My dedication to the field of mental health stems from my professional experience in child welfare. The commitment to reduce the twin problem of abuse and trauma associated with removing children from their family of origin informed my decision to pursue a doctorate degree in psychology. In addition to providing evidence-based intervention, I am also interested in research related to racial stressors and complex trauma. My clinical interventions are hugely informed by research and evidence-based practice.

I use cognitive behavioral therapy, the multicultural therapy, narrative approach, and integrative approach in treatment. This means that I emphasize helping individual patients learn to be their own therapists. We focus on exercises in the session as well as homework exercises outside of sessions. Clients are helped develop coping skills, whereby they can learn to change their thinking, problematic emotions, and behavior. More importantly, we focus on what is going on in the client’s life, rather than what has led to their difficulties. In addition to the above, we incorporate multicultural therapy to address concerns related to religion, ethnicity, gender identification, income, or other social factors.

I would describe my approach as warm and supportive, and I am ready to help clients address their presenting concerns while also respecting their autonomy. Therapeutic alliance and collaboration are essential. In other words, I recognize that clients are the experts of their own lives when we establish goals and steps to address the concerns presented in therapy.
