Hi, my name is Alan and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the states of Georgia, Maryland and the District of Columbia. I have been Licensed as a Professional Counselor since 1996. I have a master’s degree from the University of Connecticut at Bridgeport CT, as well as course work in professional counseling from Georgia State University, Capella University and the William Alanson White institute for psychotherapy.
Currently I run a Human Service Program at a college in Maryland where I teach students how to be “Helpers” I teach courses in individual, family, addiction and group counseling.
I have over 40 years of counseling experience working with people from all walks of life as well all ages, (i.e. nationalities, race sex & sexual orientation etc.) I have worked in such diverse settings as prisons, community mental health centers, college counseling centers, state mental hospitals, drug treatment centers Veterans hospitals & Vet Centers, inpatient psychiatric hospitals and private practice
What makes me a good clinician is rooted is my ability to connect with people in a genuine and egalitarian way. I am a firm believer that the “relationship” between client and therapist is the key to successful outcome in therapy. We all come to counseling with a “broken” narrative about our life. I see my task as helping people replace that broken narrative, with a healthy narrative where the client is the hero of their narrative. Unfortunately, some of us (me included) have faced “adverse experiences and even trauma “that can derail our “life narrative” and send us down the road of despair, depression, addiction and even criminality. By building a strong relationship with client’s I help them re-write their “narrative’ so they can a become a hero of their own story rather than a minor player in a drama in life they cannot escape. Whether I am a teacher or therapist “keeping it real” (as my students say) is my credo. If we work together I will always be honest, genuine, caring and help you address your issues in a practical, problem solving ways as well as help you understand the larger issues of depression, anxiety, isolation, loneliness and meaning in your life.
I promise I will listen, support, care, help you problem solve and focus on helping you understand who you are and what you want in life, as if we were sitting together in a face to face consulting room. One final comment Although we will have a designated time to talk, I want you to feel free to contact me anytime day or night, I check my computer very frequently and I am never bothered by my clients who contact me out of genuine need and concern.
I look forward to working with you in the future

These quotes represent just a few of the many positive reviews that we have received for Alan Kahn. We don’t pay anyone to provide their review and they are all made voluntarily. Some people's experience receiving therapy with BetterHelp might be different.
Alan is very easy to talk to, he offers constructive feedback and makes it a point to stay connected between sessions.
Alan Kahn is an amazing Therapist and from day one understood the challenges that I was faced, quickly diagnosed the root cause and put me up on a plan that’s been nothing but transformational. In 3 months since I started therapy with him, I’ve changed completely and have become a stronger, better person! Alan’s inspirational, perceptive, empathetic, supportive and coaches you every step of the way. He’s great in short!!
My therapist is super supportive and helpful in focusing on what is important for my growth.
He's very understanding, and helps me see things from a different perspective.
I am so glad to have a counselor who understands the most recent studies about and approaches to treating trauma and particularly complex PTSD. I would not have sought out a male therapist but it is working out great and perhaps even better, particularly with regard to helping where my marriage is concerned. I deeply appreciate and value the consistency of support and care I am shown by Alan as a therapist. The touch base messages between appointments definitely make a difference for me and at times help bring back my focus to the self- care I need to practice. Thank you!
Alan is warm, friendly, funny, personable, respectful, professional and has great life experience that he has applied to our sessions together. He's very insightful and knowledgeable and has taught me some useful and interesting things during our sessions so far too. He’s a brilliant counselor and would recommend him to anyone and everyone!
Alan helped me work through a lot of issues that I had. His super relaxed and honest demeanor made me feel comfortable saying things I wouldn't normally say aloud or even admit to myself. I would highly recommend him to anyone.
I love Alan!! He is the sweetest, most thorough therapist I’ve had in a while. He actually remembers things I’ve told him pertaining to my past and helps me connect them my present situations. I truly appreciate how responsive and meticulous he is. GIVE HIM A RAISE!
From my first session with Alan I felt confident that he had a good grasp on the issues that I wanted to work through. He is an excellent listener who makes strong connections and gives very thoughtful, useful and pertinent advice and resources. I am so thankful to have been matched with Alan and looking forward to continuing my work with him. I’m already so much better for it.
What can I say, Alan has been a tremendous help across many aspects of my life. His patience, reassurance and ability to provide a safe space have been invaluable to me. His guidance in relation to parental relationships and their knock-on effects has helped me address pain that ive been holding for many years. I couldn’t recommend Alan enough - thanks mate!
Dr. Kahn is a true pleasure to work with, and anyone would be lucky to have him as their counselor.
First therapist in a long while that I have felt truly wants to help me! He has helped feed my inner child who was hurting and has helped me see me for my true worth. I recommend him to everyone!
Alan is an amazing counselor / therapist. He listens and has very insightful answers. I really appreciate everything he is doing to help me.
He is truly an amazing person he really listens . And he has a lot of experience ;)
So far so good! We’re early into our sessions yet but Alan’s been a great listener and communicator.
Very informative session. Knowledgeable and professional. Nice person.
Alan is a counselor who listens and suggests helpful methods of dealing with my concerns.
Dr. Kahn is a very passionate and understanding person! He takes the time to understand my feelings and what I was going through and have given me very good insights on life and have given me a greater understanding of the importance of self love and self independency. For the 6 months of therapy I have received, he has been there for me and checked up on me when I needed guidance and encouraged me to do better habits when I feel upset. I have learnt so much about myself and about am happy where I am in life because I met Dr. Kahn!
Alan Kahn is a warm and likeable person. He is knowledgeable and strategic in his attempts to get to the foundational issues. I came to him not quite understanding the reason I felt the need to get therapy so we are exploring my past together to come to some sort of determination of what's needed. I have enjoyed our sessions thus far and look forward to getting closer to my awareness.
Alan is helpful and exactly understands the point . Realistic approach and friendly approach . I would highly recommend him to all irrespective of any specific challenge .
Alan is one of the best counselors I’ve ever had. And I’ve had a few. He does an amazing job linking the fundamentals of psychology to things you may be thinking or feeling. He also using easy to remember psychological terms or phrases that will help you to better navigate your life. Alan is super easy to talk to and has a wide range of experience. I highly recommend working with Alan.
Excellent counselor. He has helped me through many issues. I’m excited to see what else is in store!
Alan provided me with support, insight and encouragement in dealing with a recently ended relationship. With his help, I've been able to process the situation and move forward successfully. Alan is a compassionate person, I would highly recommend his services. I will seek his help in the future to deal with life's ups and downs.
Alan is wonderful! He has helped me immensely with understanding my own lived experiences more and with improving my relationship with my parents.
I love Dr. Kahn - he is a very good listener and very patient and kind in helping me work through tough emotions. I had trauma happen to me years ago that I hadn't worked through that was still affecting my life, and he was able to inquire, intuit and give guidance that has made a huge difference in my daily emotional state. He is also a teacher himself so I felt he was really good as a counselor at giving resources and tools, like a teacher would. Highly recommend.
Alan is a very experienced professional. It has been incredibly easy to connect with him, he understood my concerns very well and showed me ways of thinking that I haven't been very comfortable about before. I had to stop for a while for personal reasons but I am sure as long as he is available, I will need his help in the future as well.
I have loved speaking with Alan. He is like talking to an old friend. He’s kind and gracious and always comforts and supports me. Gives great advice and always make me feel like I’m not “crazy” haha. Couldn’t recommend him enough!
Alan has been so helpful to me wading my way through my emotional state and helping me become a better person, mother and wife. He is always checking in with me to make sure I am ok, and has giving me so wonderful resources to put my concerns into perspective. He is very open with me and makes me feel extremely comfortable. He never makes me feel like my problems are trivial, and guides me just enough to find cause for all my complex emotions.
Highly recommend! Alan is attentive as well as communicative. He has a variety of mindsets that differ by how you feel to keep you engaged and understanding that there is not just one way to think
I love my counselor, he is very understanding and although we’re in two different time zones, he responds almost immediately. When I first started using this app, I had to switch my counselor because she was a bit too busy for me. The app then paired me with Alan. Alan is excellent, he has helped shift my perspective and build clarity. I recommend Alan to anyone in need of a great counselor!
Dr. Kahn is a brilliant and caring psychologist. In our first session, he nudged me towards difficult topics I hadn’t considered while making me feel supported, valued, and heard. His thoughtful synthesis of what I’d shared stayed with me and continued to provoke reflections. I’m excited to build our relationship and learning together - could not recommend more highly!
So far Alan has been responsive and I really feels like he cares for my mental health. He consistently checks in if I haven’t written anything in a while which I appreciate. I have a long way to go, but I feel like I am in good hands.
Mr. Alan is very helpful by contributing to my transformation as a man.
Alan has been very responsive and a great listener. I’ve enjoyed my time working with Alan and think others would highly recommend him to others.
