Dr. Cassandra April

(Ed.D, LCPC)

About Me

I am a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Illinois with over 25 years of experience in the mental health field. I am currently only practicing Christian Counseling, meaning counseling that has a Christian faith perspective freely incorporated into the process, without reservation. I am an African-American female, and have helped individuals, families, couples, and groups, from all walks of life, deal with a wide range of life challenges such as: trauma, stress, abuse, neglect, abandonment, depression, anxiety, substance abuse, codependency, unresolved conflict, family separation, criminal behavior, and spiritual matters.

I do not operate according to the medical model and don't work with issues pertaining to psychotropic medications or imbalanced brain chemistry. I operate from the perspective that we all have choices, and need to make healthy ones in order to live mentally, emotionally, and spiritually healthy lives. There is no magic in counseling. Problems did not arise overnight, and they won't be fixed overnight. Healing is a journey. It is a process and takes time.

My work has been done in urban, suburban, and rural areas. I have served clients of all ages, from young children to senior adults, representing various ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. I believe that everyone should be treated with respect and dignity, no matter their background or life circumstances. I have practiced in a number of different settings that include community mental health centers, community medical clinics, residential facilities, school settings, and private group practices. I have also taught counseling and psychology as an adjunct professor, having taught at seven different colleges and universities in the Chicago land area. This is in addition to conducting workshops on mental health and wellness.
