Helen Hampton
About me
I am a Pluralistic Counsellor based in Scotland. Pluralistic therapy is all about being flexible and adapting to the needs of the individual. Clients are unique and a one-size-fits-all approach does not work for everyone. I start by getting to know the client. How do their difficulties impact their life and what could things be like if those problems weren't there? I have the skills that enable me to develop a therapeutic relationship with clients. They can talk through and resolve the challenges they are facing. The clients wisdom plus my wisdom is what will make the difference.
Clients may be looking for counselling after trying hard to resolve a problem on their own. Before deciding what will help I explore what has not worked, or worked in part, and recognise the strengths and resources clients bring to their therapy. I believe the client is the expert in themselves. As a pluralistic counsellor with training and experience in a variety of therapeutic approaches I can adapt to many circumstances. My training and experience includes Person-Centred Counselling, CBT, Psychoanalysis/Psychodynamic Therapy, Transactional Analysis, Gestalt, and Brief Solution-Focussed Approach, amongst others.
I have extensive experience of working with people who have experienced trauma - PTSD and Complex PTSD.
Confidentiality, deep acceptance, and genuine warmth are the main values that underpin my practice. Counselling works by tapping into the clients' ability to resolve problems, learn and develop through talking to someone else: someone with the right knowledge, skills and experience. Working with anyone starts with developing a therapeutic relationship and the core conditions of empathy, authenticity and unconditional positive regard help me to do this. I take a neuroscience perspective to understand people and to develop a good working relationship.
I bring the hope and the courage that my clients may not feel they have.

Helen is really easy to talk to, very supportive and listens. Her advice is really clear and she makes me feel really comfortable speaking about things I would not usually be able to speak about freely

Having anxiety means that sometimes I can't express myself well. Helen just seems to totally get my meaning and be able to support me so that I feel complete heard and understood and we've only spoken twice so far. I'm impressed and relieved to have found her!
